Any Morel Mushroom Hunters

I look for morels, but all I find are slippery jacks

There are no poisonous mushrooms that look like a morel. If you are mistaking a smooth looking or other colored mushroom for a morel you’re blind.

A morel looks like a troll’s stinger fruiting from the dirt. ?

Not quite true. There are false morels to watch out for. They are not edible.

Around here in MN there are some that are very close in appearance. They usually are not hollow like true morels.

Last autumn, I buried some shitake inoculated logs at a spot under some oaks. I forgot about them putting them out there. Yesterday there were two nice mushrooms growing on one of the logs. I suppose that counts as mushroom hunting during to lockdown. For scale, they are each about four inches in diameter.

We went out again today. We didn't manage to stumble on any morels buy it was so nice i don't think anyone minded. We did find a bunch of elms. So in the right area we just need to keep looking. Thanks for all the tips guys.

My wife's family in northeast Missouri, near the Iowa line and the Mississippi River, hunted morels in the woods; it's beautiful country. In France they hunt truffles and train pigs and dogs to find them. I met a little truffle hunting dog, who was greatly appreciated by his owner.

Verpa bohemica can be more easily mistaken

Make sure the cap is attached at the stem, and that the stem is hollow.

I hunt for several kinds of mushrooms. Flavor-wise, I think honey mushrooms may be among my favorites, but they can be a bit trickier to ID as a newbie.

Hen of the Woods in the fall is a great one to start with, as are chicken mushrooms, which may already be starting in some areas of North America.

oh, and be sure to cook all wild mushrooms. There are exceptions (like porcini) that can be eaten raw, but eating raw morels for example will make you sick.

Honey mushrooms are also known to cause, um, "intestinal distress" in some people, typically due to over-eating, which can be different for every person. Heck, any wild mushroom can interact with people differently, so start with small portions!
