Any Love for Penny Farthing?

I'm about half way through a tin of GLP Penny Farthing. I came into this tin with no expectations as I have not seen a lot about the blend.

Well, I'm liking it quite a bit. The shag cut is a nice change and packs nice. It smokes faster than ribbon cut which is nice when I don't have a full hour or more to enjoy the tobacco. Tobacco Reviews has it listed as red and bright virginias with perique and dark fired.

I can taste the VAs, nice sweetness to the blend and the perique is a nice dark fruit presence. The dark fired is just enough to give it some more complexity and sets it apart from your standard vaper.

Anyone else like this blend?

I will bring it down a notch. Of all the GLP blends, this one I believe is less than stellar. And to be further contradictory, I think it is the Dark Fired that muddles this one.

Yeh, I just got bored with the first tin I opened. So bored that I just stopped trying. It wasn't awful. In fact, had it been a little worse, I probably would have said something.

The biggest problem with Penny Farthing is it's not available in 8oz Tins.

I wouldn’t say much negative or positive for my tastes, really. I picked up a 3 yr. old tin from my nearest tobacconist and got to smoking. Of course, it being a shag cut, I didn’t expect much from the time it’d spent in the tin, and looking back I believe I assumed rightly. I felt as if the DFK smokiness really pushes this one into an odd place that my palate didn’t care for, which is interesting, because I don’t hate Fired Kentucky, and I usually go ham for GLP’s VA-based blends. Honestly though, I think I hadn’t learned my lesson from the other shag blend I had spent time with, Le Petit Robin, the lesson being that I don’t care much for shag cut tobacco. I am far, far, far closer to a sipper in cadence than a chuffer, but, with a such a fine shag cut, even when sipped as slowly as I can possibly manage, it burns much too quick for my forever-low nicotine tolerance. I’m sure that for some folks who dig Fired Kentucky and some quick nicotine might just go bananas for the stuff, but, for me, a piper who regularly finds oneself smoking predominantly flakes that don’t make me feel weird, it just isn’t my jam.

I have, and yes, it's like loading beef jerky. But I'll take that over a day at the office anytime.

I had a tin of it a while back. I remember it as being good enough to finish the tin, but I didn't like it enough to buy another. The best part of it for me was that it was a shag.

Haha, no but it should be! I'd think a nice simple Runowski burley blend would suffice.

It's kinda weird to me that everyone went nuts over a shag. McClellands had a few shags, 221b series... I still have a tin. I just never saw the big deal in them.

I find them particularly hassle free when it comes to packing and smoking, but other than that I don't get it either.

exactly. I don't dry any shag blends at all and they work fine. There is one exception in McClelland's 221b Black Shag though. That blend needs an hour or two.

Penny Farthing is perfect right out of the tin.
