It's kinda weird to me that everyone went nuts over a shag. McClellands had a few shags, 221b series... I still have a tin. I just never saw the big deal in them.
It wasn't so much just that it's a shag, but a shag Va/Per, which I didn't know of any so I was inclined to try it.
Actually, I slice my plugs so thin and rub them out that they all end up being shags as well. I like the cut.

my experience with shags says don't worry about even burns the tamper is your friend. Kiss the match to the tobacco and pack it tighter then you would a ribbon. It's really crazy how much they open up when you smoke them that way or at least they do for me. It doesn't matter if it burns seams as long as you tamp it a little slight bit more ocd then you would with a typical ribbon. I hope I explained it in a way that makes enough sense to be useful.

Packing tighter is a must. Otherwise it burns like a cotton swab in a coal furnace.

My tastes have gone haywire in the last 6 months or so, and any blend I smoke with DFK means that's all I taste.

I have a tin of Penny Farthing, but I'll be sitting on it for a while do to the aforementioned, and because I already have too much open that needs to be smoked.
For what it's worth, the DFK is very, very light in this blend. It's does not stand out but takes a far back seat.

Was it covid that messed with your palate? I’ve been wanting to start a thread asking if anyone else experienced that. Maybe there’s a therapy group for us covid-afflicted pipesmokers.
I don't think I've experienced any covid-related tasting changes. I'm in a profession that requires me to get tested regularly as a result of being in contact with the less-than-healthy, and I've never tested positive, despite being exposed to many covid-positive persons.

Despite all the above, I could be wrong, and covid could have had an affect, despite any logic I might try to suggest to the contrary.
