Glad to have found this site.

I'm currently watching a ton of videos and reading Hacker's 'Ulitmate Pipe Book', but I have yet to purchase and smoke a pipe. I'm moving to Florida from Michigan in March, and once I'm settled in will treat myself to what I think will be a great experience.

I'm looking at purchasing a MM Corn Cob and a Savinelli Tortuga Rusticated

Not sure what tobacco to start out with though. I could use some suggestions from your guys.

Thx,

JR McDuff

Carter Hall practically smokes itself! Just load it up, tap to settle, light. Goes great with coffee. Usually reliably available everywhere, might have to hit up a tobacconist to get some at the moment.

Welcome. The Tortuga 626 is a nice pipe. Generally anything by Sutliff is good IMO. Reasonably priced, and an assortment of blends that you can buy in bulk.

Welcome!☕️ Definitely agree with others before that starting off with an OTC blend and a cob would be a good start. Lightly flavored Carter Hall or something that shouldn’t ? your mouth while you’re learning your cadence would be good. I’d stay away from heavily gooped up aromatic blends as they tend to smoke hot for beginners. Keep coming back with questions and this crew has made most of your mistakes already. ?

Welcome from Spokane, WA!
I agree with the above gents. Codger blends aren't a bad way to go right off the bat.
My first loves in tobacco were Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake and Luxury Bullseye Flake, which are bulk blends and very affordable. However, I heartily recommend Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic as a great codger blend!

I have a Tortuga myself--a smooth Canadian (lost the cap) and love it! All my Sav's smoke great. Just make sure that the cob you get has a hardwood plug in the bottom of the bowl...a few extra dollars but well worth it.

Oh, and welcome from the Piedmont of NC

Welcome! Tampa area here. I would go with the recommendation of ordering a few 1 or 2 oz packages to try out and see what you like.

I would further say, try tobaccos from different families in the pipe realm. There are a lot of "codger" and aromatic recommendations. I say go for it and then some. I would highly recommend adding into the samples some English blends as they tend to smoke cooler and not upset your mouth/tongue as much. I started smoking piped with aromatics and didn't like it until I moved on and tried some VaPers (Virginia and Perique) and English Blends. For me, I found English blends are where it is at.

If you decide to go down that road however, I would say to have a pipe dedicated to any English blends due to latakias smokiness.

Best of luck on your journey

Welcome! You can't go wrong with a Savinelli. A very accessible starter's blend is Drucquer & Sons Inns of Court, available from smokingpipes.com. Good luck! You're in for a treat!
