Mixture 79. There, I said it! nnnn

View attachment 240820

I know I am not the only one. All joking aside, it is worth a try. Fortunately it is not everyone’s cup of tea which makes it always available.
I have a tub that I continue to just keep filling with the bulk version when I get low. Sutliffs #600 Mixture-79 is really good. Seems like the bulk is toned down a bit and it's easier to keep lit. It's also more economical to buy 10 ounces at a time and dump it in my tub lol.

You know, I needed a filter also when I smoked Kentucky Club Mild. When I tried it in one of my Kaywoodies it did bite me. Smoking it in my Dr. Grabows with a DG filter I got no bite at all. How was the room note? That and the taste is what attracted me to Kentucky Club.
Seemed okay to me, Try 2oz and see.

I don't smoke the same blend all day, but I smoke a number of different blends that could be all day blends for the right smoker.

All day blends? I can't spend enough waking hours with a pipe in my mouth for it to be a question. I can sneak in 1.5 pipes in a workday stretched out over the 10 hours, 10 minutes here and there for a smoke break, and about 20 minutes around lunchtime. I really wish I had the opportunity to smoke like my grandfather's generation, a pipe in the teeth from when he woke up to bedtime except for meals.

Right now I'd say any of the codger burley blends or matches that strike your fancy would be the archetype all day blend, as that's what they were blended for. Easy enough to smoke, interesting when you want it yet fading in the background when you want that, easy on the wallet, and a room note that kept Grandma somewhere between happy and quiet about it. But Sutliff, C&D (after a couple months in glass), Mac Baren, Stokkebye, GLP, and others make blends that could easily dethrone the Prince or pointer dog.

If it were me, if I were staring at retirement or a job that let's me smoke all day (real all day, not smoke breaks peppered throughout the day), I couldn't do one blend all day. Variety was, still is really, a big reason why I like pipes so much. Sure I'd be smoking Sutliff Field and Stream Match mostly. But I'd still be ripping through the wondrous variety that makes up my cellar, and the new blends that still enter the cellar all wide eyed and innocent.

Blends in most genres aren't significantly different enough for me to invest much space for them in the collection.
Exactly, I found that so many blends are too similar to make that much difference to my old palate. I have decided on a couple blends from each genre to smoke regularly. I get a sample from time to time to try just to change things a little bit, but over all there are about 6 blends that I smoke regularly.

I think that's why I mostly smoke C&D blends. I know they are still cased, but it seems like they are more "pure" than many European manufacturers.

Initially I didn't find the appeal with C&D and found most of their blends to be boring in the pipe. I've since come to appreciate what they offer.

C&D does not case some of their blends.

As others have posted, I really don't pipe all day long but just once or twice a day, and break every three or four to give my tongue a rest.

Generally, I prefer alternating every other day between a high in vitamin N blend and full English blend. For instance, I'll pipe War Horse Green followed by Maltese Falcon the next, then I'll pipe Nightcap followed the next day again with Maltese or Early Morning.

And so on.

Is there a list of uncased blends that they offer? Love their stuff.
Theres no essential list but it is referanced it C&D articles and Youtube videos. I’m sure if you reach out to SPC/C&D they may provide a list.

Just know this is why a lot don’t like their tobacco. They try the uncased blends and don’t like it. But we are lucky to have a blender offer tobacco this way. I love it myself as well.

Good idea, I'll send them an email.

Revisiting this thread. FWIW IMO unlike many I don’t smoke all day, but today I’ll have 3-4 bowls because it is so darn nice outside on the deck and we will have a major heat wave the next four days. I’m really starting to narrow down a bit what I like and don’t the last month or so and revisiting some blends and genres. I think “all day smoke” in terms of potential to repeat and some blends I like will coat the tongue a bit and I don’t repeat those in a morning or afternoon. Right now I’m revisiting Merchant Service Fireside Chat from KBB and this is a blend I could enjoy back to back to back if I wanted to, but I’ll grab a different pipe and …. something different will go in it.
