doberman, Spilman Mixture is decidedly mild, and I suppose many think it tastes like the proverbial "cardboard," but to the contrary, under all that mildness is a nice array of flavors. Sometimes I want a quiet blend that speaks with authority, which for me is Spilman Mixture. I'm glad someone else sees its virtue.

I don't smoke anything all day, but not all of my frequently repeated blends are mild. Some strong blends don't seem to bite as much, nor do they bother me with a nicotine buzz. I'm pretty content with C&D Stratfordshire and Bayou Nights, and Peterson 3-P and Irish Flake, among others. Easily tolerated blends don't have to be way mild.

There are two camps, those who like variety in tobacco and those who have their brand. Are the latter actually so rare these days?

While it may seem so, on a pipe forum where Tobacco is the focus of most discussion.

If this was a beer forum, you wouldn't hear much from the lifelong brand consumer. His cellar isn’t a wall length, clear glass reefer unit with 100 brands of beer of every variety, Pilsner, Porter, Stout, Ale, Wheat — and let’s not forget the the OTC’s, Budweiser, Miller, Coors. You get the idea.

I wonder if there exists a majority of pipe smokers, whom contentedly enjoy a single brand, perhaps a second favorite if their brand isn’t available.

Just as MSO’s father who enjoyed his brand of tobacco from age 15 to 65 — there has to be more pipe smokers just like this.

I guess by all day you are referring to what I call a good "mowing the lawn" tobacco. Interesting, but not 1 with a ton of subtlety and nuance in the flavors that I have to really pay attention or feel like I am missing out on something. No real prep/drying, not too many relights, just a good smoke that can burn while getting stuff done. ....
I can relate to that. Time comes to mow or do chores outside and I load the yard cobs with Sutliff Burley Delight mostly or any VaBur.

I’ve never been more disappointed with humanity than reading this thread.

All these so called “connoisseurs” and not one mention of the King of Tobacco - Granger!!

it’s almost unfathomable and preposterous.
That brings up a good point. The old codger blends are all day smokes by design. Granger, SWR, SWRA or LLRR would be excellent choices.

I never smoke the same blend in a day, never mind one for all day. I love variety and have no reason to change the way I smoke my pipes. I also never smoke the same pipe more than once a day. Once I am finished with a pipe, I let it cool and then clean the piss out of it and put it back in it's rack. I smoke 4-6 bowls a day so I am doing a fair amount of cleaning in a day. I actually don't mind cleaning my pipes as I really do like a fresh pipe every time I go to smoke a pipe.

The thought of ever not cleaning a pipe before smoking it, just sounds gross to me and I am not sure why. We all have our habits and we all have out way of doing things.

I'd characterize it as something that you like enough to smoke every day (but not necessarily all day), doesn't require a lot of thought or effort, and doesn't break the bank. Mine used to be McClelland's 2030 #1 Grade Balkan. Sutliff 503 Heavy English was a close replacement, but not quite there. Russ Ouellette suggested adding a small amount of Sutliff 507-S Stoved Virginia (10:1 ratio) and that did the trick. Lighting up another bowl now!

For me, an all day blend has to be affordable, available locally and something I enjoy smoking, Sir Walter Raleigh comes to mind.

Recently we were going through my grandmother's estate, the whole family came down. There was an 8x10 picture of my grandfather at work, all the guys lined up at the office after some important project was complete. In most of the desks in view was an ashtray. Those desks had small cigarette boxes, small humidors full of cigars, or a tub of favorite codger. Even the secretary's desk had a pack of Marlboros.

That got me thinking, what does an all day smoke mean? I can't smoke inside anywhere anymore. Between small children in the house and smoking bands in public, I can't smoke all day. A pipe to and from work, one during work (split up throughout the day), and maybe 2 in the evening. That's 5 pipes a day if I push it, which I usually don't. Generally 4 a day so I can see the toddler before she goes to bed. And they're so spread out that I think Five Bros could conceivably be an all day smoke in that circumstance.

For me, C&D Oriental Silk with my coffee on the way to work and Field and Stream Match after dinner. Anything else is pretty much whatever I feel like at the moment. Best of both worlds!
The circumstances you describe match mine. And, on most days, I get in no more than 1-3 bowls per day. 5 Brothers Is often my ‘all day’ smoke.

It's kind of funny, the pipe tobaccos that were made for all day smoking back through the 1940s up till now, well, most give me terrible tongue bite. Velvet, Granger, Half & Half and a few others. Sir Walter Raleigh regular and aromatic don't, and neither does Prince Albert. Carter Hall is smooth but boring to me. Carter Hall was my first all day smoke for a few years, then I went to SWRA for about two years. One day I was reading reviews and saw that alot of pipe smokers really liked SWR regular rather then the aromatic. I bought a pouch on one of my orders and smoked it up in a day. I immediately ordered two tubs and smoked that for a long time. Then I was at Walmart one day and while in line I saw they had Prince Albert in the 1.5oz boxes. I bought one for the heck of it and through it in my tobacco drawer where it sat for weeks. One afternoon I decided to try it and it was immediately love at first puff. No bite, smooth as butter, good taste and the aroma takes me back to my great grandfather who smoked PA and Union Leader in Acme bought Dr. Grabow billiards. Sure I smoke other tobacco, Pegasus is a favorite of mine as well but Prince Albert is my smoke. I'm a huge "vintage" John Middleton pipe tobacco fan. I'm very upset that the classics have been discontinued. I know that if Middleton still had their line up I most certainly wouldn't smoke any other brand. Kentucky Club Mild would be my all day smoke if it were still available. I liked it better than PA, I just didn't appreciate it more when it was being made. The time I really enjoyed it, Middleton had already discontinued it. I wish I had picked up a few more tubs when Ekerd Drugstore was selling them off.

Milan Tobacco makes "Our" Kentucky Club Mild. I smoke it regularly. I had the good fortune recently to be given a tub of the original, which I was able to compare to the Milan. They are very close in flavor. I needed a filter in the MM Boone I purchased for the Middleton; I use that same pipe, without the filter, for the Milan. Give it a shot. puffy

It's pretty rare for me to smoke the same blend all day long, as I have a system from lighter to more flavorful blends that I will smoke throughout the day. However, in a rare pinch, I will leave the house with a pipe and a jar to smoke while out and about... usually when I have no idea how long I will be out.
But, when I do this, I usually just grab one of my own homegrown Virginias, because it is uncased, smooth, and tasty enough to keep me interested. I find that if I smoke something cased over and over that the sugars or whatever is in them will tax my tongue.

That does not mean that I don't smoke cased tobaccos. FVF, Curley Cut Delux, HH Pure Virginia, etc... are some of my favorites. I just don't smoke them all day.

You know, I needed a filter also when I smoked Kentucky Club Mild. When I tried it in one of my Kaywoodies it did bite me. Smoking it in my Dr. Grabows with a DG filter I got no bite at all. How was the room note? That and the taste is what attracted me to Kentucky Club.

I think that's why I mostly smoke C&D blends. I know they are still cased, but it seems like they are more "pure" than many European manufacturers.

Initially I didn't find the appeal with C&D and found most of their blends to be boring in the pipe. I've since come to appreciate what they offer.

A little surprised LBF hasn’t popped up. Decent price, lowish nic, not much bite unless puffed like an absolute freight train, tasty enough if you pay attention but can easily be ignored, etc.

I prefer more of a nic hit, but LBF has all the hallmarks of an all day smoke. I mix a little Five Brothers in sometimes.

Middleton Apple was one of first loves. Can't find a decent replacement for it,

Until just recently, I smoked Prince Albert about 90%of the time. I figured... "I've got all these pipes and different tobaccos, why not expand the palate?". Smoke what you like and like what you smoke.
