Any blend that has been around for many decades has some kind of appeal. Nothing appeals to everyone. I think the old over-the-counter blends attract a certain amount of disrespect compared to the specialty blends, but it's usually not justified. People who don't like burley, or can't taste it, won't like anything featuring burley forward. And that's okay.

This thread convinced me to try Mixture 79--just ordered a pouch. Almost every blend that I've heard people drama-queen over as being terrible has been great to me, so reverse psychology is it.
Also hawky and chasingembers like it, and they have good taste.
Haha, I absolutely agree and in fact I tend to seek out those blends that people cry about, as I know you do, too. That's where the gold is!

I received 2oz of Mixture 79 Cherry from www.wvsmokeshop.com yesterday. I've only smoked 2 bowls so far and find it similar to regular M-79. The cherry taste and aroma is very faint. I've smoked it in a cob first and then a briar. It is much better in the cob. I found it harsh in the briar, even when smoked slow. It starts out cherry but fades very quickly. By the time I got to the half way point I couldn't tell the difference between regular 79 and the cherry blend. It finishes a tad harsher then regular 79. Although I'll finish the 2oz sample, I'd recommend regular 79 over the cherry. Of course this is only my opinion, so yours may differ if you smoke it.

It's official: I'm a fan. I've posted my review here.
A brief excerpt:

I don't think there is really anything particularly distinctive about Mixture 79 that sets it apart from other aromatics. Obviously, if you don't like aromatics, you won't like this. But if you are someone who enjoys smoking aromatics on occasion, this is simply one more you may want to try at some point. I didn't find the licorice topping to be fundamentally different from others common toppings like maple, honey, vanilla, chocolate, cherry, apple, etc.

I dig deer tongue; I'm down with tounqin; I can even rock with Lakeland... but Mixture 79 is heavy in the perfume department.
The Burley is all right; most of the topping is pleasant enough: light anise, maybe a bit of menthol... but every time I start grooving with the flavor, I get a penalty spritz of granny's perfume (and it's the stuff left over from the Great Depression). I tell myself: maybe it's an acquired taste? Then--POOF-- I'm reminded: nope, this is how's it's going to be... FOREVER.
Re-lights are even worse! It's like when you have a sore throat, and you never realized just how often you actually swallow, until you're rewarded with searing pain upon every gulp. Yeah... I need to learn to keep my pipe lit with only 2 matches.

You had me at "penalty spritz of granny's perfume left over from the Great Depression"
While I truly don't mean to pile on, my favorite entry found at Tobacco Reviews was for Mix 79: "Imagine smoking a urinal cake; that's what this was like".
To those who smoke it and enjoy it...more power to you!

My grandfather, who was the person who started me smoking a pipe, smoked Mixture 79. I haven't tried it yet but I know I'll get around to it sooner or later.

What I'd like to know is: how do you know what smoking a urinal cake tastes like in order to make that comparison to Mixture 79? Inquiring minds want to know...

The urinal cake comparison doesn't entice me. I'm reluctant on Capt Black Grape. But often pouch tobaccos, those step children of high tone pipe tobaccos, can be a fine smoke. Pouch tobaccos that I have tried last year that I found satisfying and good are Erin Go Braugh, a whiskey aromatic; John Bull Royal English, English as it says; and Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic, burley based with Virginia as a condiment and flavored with a dash of three liqueurs. They're often inexpensive. The quantity is just right for a sample. The pouch will preserve them for a while if you have them in regular rotation, and it's convenient for the car or travel. I ordered these three blends just for sport, but I was impressed. Nothing low-end about them, to my taste.
