And the price is right! No reason not to try it really.
Thanks for the heads up, Duane.
Less expensive to buy in bulk at SPC than the tub. Around $25/pound.

That's it. I'm buying some.
Let's change its reputation! The power is ours!
After all of the negative reviews and near universal hatred for Mixture 79, I was pleasantly surprised and very glad I tried it. It has been my before bed smoke for the past couple of days.

Never underestimate the value in thinking for yourself.

It's a damn good smoke! I love it. Next time I buy it, I'm buying the tub. Dry it out for about 30 min to an hour and it smokes like a dream! Don't understand the hate at all, it's one of the better aromatics that I've tried.
*Edit - Oh dang! I didn't even realize SPC carried it! I thought the only way ya could buy a large quantity was obtaining the tub. Hells to the yeah, I'm buying a feakin' pound!

Duane, I'll be ordering Mixture 79 too. Your recommendation of Black Frigate was solid as the Giza Pyramid, and I'm getting more of that as well. I've been smoking it for almost a week and find it smokes slow and easy with a great dark fruitiness.

It had to happen sooner or later...
Actually Mixture 79 is quite popular. We have a few more august members here who hate it, so it's become the standard example of a blend to avoid and a standing joke. But, it's actually popular and quite highly thought of.

I tried a sample last year and kept enough of it for another bowl or two. I like to open the jar once in awhile and smell it.

It is a unique smelling and tasting tobacco that is very distinctive.

I think its unpopularity might be because of its propensity to ghost pipes, and rooms.

I saw immediately, that it didn't deserve all the disdain it gets here, but I wasn't taken with it enough to make it a go to blend.

I found that Velvet and Granger are darned good smokes too.

Isn't it ironic, Balkan Sobranie can go out of production for decades while the heinous and most vile of blends, Mixture 79, continues selling perpetually.
It really does make me wonder if there is such a thing as an OTC English blend?

Yeah, and look at Hugh... he's still got gorgeous babes hanging on his elbows! (Unless he passed and I missed it!)
And ok, I'll come out too: I really enjoy Mixture 79 when in the proper mood! (And for me, mood is everything with tobacco!) I actually remember a tin of that sitting on my dad's dresser in the 50's and 60's.

I, too, never understood all the rants against 79. As long as you're OK with licorice and Lakeland, you'll be OK with 79. I think the loudest vehemence comes from those who particularly hate those flavors (Lakeland especially). I don't like it enough to stock up on, and I may never go through the 2 oz sample I got from 4noggins but I won't bash it.

I've enjoyed Mixture 79 for years, but a word of caution....dedicate a pipe to this blend because it will leave an eternal ghost in the bowl, yes even in cobs. I have 4 cobs, 2 briars & 1 meerschaum dedicated to Mixture 79. Everytime I smoke it, it reminds me of the smell in my mother's laundry room when I was just a wee lad. It gets better further down the bowl you smoke, but I rarely smoke it all the way to the bottom because it can get harsh tasting. I wonder what how good the Mixture 79 Cherry is. Anybody ever smoke that?

+1 on that. I tried MX79 and didn't care for it, Got a Kawoodie that's had a salt bath and still reminds me of that ghastly stuff

I've been secretly searching for that Anise Flavored Pipe Dream. I felt like I had discovered it wil Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky and GLPease Sixpence. The ODSK is more molasses/anise and the Sixpence is not candied anise but high quality spirit anise(Pernod, I believe). Mixture 79 looks to be the thing I need to try, to get that balls off the wall candy licorice/anise thing.
You ordered Ibs. Embers? Damn it must've made a lasting impression. I'm game.
