Tins are designed to keep the tobacco fresh as it works its way through the supply chain and sits on a store shelf for a period of time. Anything over a couple of years all bets are off.

While some tins will last for years, you have to be prepared to take some loss.

I seal all my square tins in Mylar to hedge against them losing a seal.

Good point. A burst tin will likely get your attention next time you check your cellar. A small seal leak will be more difficult to detect.
