Interesting. The Tavern Tobacco Co. tin says Knoxville, TN but when you search tobaccoreviews.com, the country of origin says UK. All the reviews I found for the various blends by the Tavern Tobacco Co. are dated from 2003 to 2017. It may have been out of production before the 2017 reviews.
rmpeeps: that’s right, and Knoxville Cigar Company went out of business in 2009.
Unless you have reason to doubt it, I’d take the 2005 markings on the Boars Head tin at face value. And from what I can gather Fribourg production was initiated in Germany in 2002, so for that tin as well 2005 appears a good approximation of what the manufacturing date is likely to have been. You can always email Kohlhase & Kopp to see if they have ways to date their tins.
I agree with the hand date stamp on the F&T Cut Blended Plug. That is the general time period of the smaller rectangle tins before they jumped to the larger ones. Also, the bar code is on the back.
Tavern Tobacco had a few blends specially made for them by both Gawith and Gawith & Hoggarth back in the early 2000's (Rusty Henge Flake comes to mind), so I believe the hand date stamp on that tin of Boar's Head is close to correct. I just checked my records and never sold one that was newer than 2003. So, 2005 may have been the buyer's date of purchase. In any event, you have a couple of great old blends!
Oh yeah I'm well acquainted with the cut plug, but I've never had one of this vintage.
The Boars Head will be a new one to me but certainly sounds promising.
I paid what I consider "the high end of fair" for them (along with a 6oz jar of 2006 FVF) so I'm going tonwait until the time is right for them.
I'm currently at capacity in regards to my open tins/jars.
