This may be a little grim, but when my wife was in rehab after hip surgeries, a pipe was a perfect way to decompress after getting home from visiting her in the evening, some time to focus on myself for an hour and sit out on the porch and experience the outdoors. A pipe also lends pleasant taste and scent dimensions to looking at art in books (since of course museums don't permit smoking).
