Not hard at all. Nowhere near my fingers and not upside down. The draw pulls it into the bowl.

By the way OP...don't remove the stem while the pipe's hot. Maybe you'd have never known there was a problem if you hadn't...

I forgot to mention this:

Until the stem is removed by the smoker/observer, it is both solid and molten. In quantum mechanics, this phenomenon is known as Schrodinger's Tenon.

Dry, dry, dry! That the heel is wet is one clue that the tobacco is too moist.
Chasing has it right: draw the flame to NEAR- not on- the tobacco. The superheated air off the tip is plenty hot enough to ignite the tobacco.
I've never had a problem with removing the stem, be it hot, cold or in-between. Then again, I don't remove it unless necessary.

That's because it's a Gan 356X and not a Rubik's cube.
