Here are authentic signatures by Alfred H Dunhill, I assume you didn't see them in my original response. Every signature, inscription, or autograph I have ever seen was identical to these. The signature in the image posted by OP doesn't even remotely compare to these verified signatures. I doubt very much OP's signature is authentic unfortunately.
I did see the signatures and I agree with you. I'm saying that it's probable that it's the son, Henry, who's making the acknowledgement on behalf of, and therefore, in his father's name.

Come on guys, really?
I bought that book at the beginning of my pipes journey.
Even so, I had suspicions as is obvious. Yeah, I know now (for sure) that's fake! (and I figured it out on my own). Did it take a year to someone decide to help? Thank you, but it's necessary anymore.
So, If I was sure, I wouldn't have asked. I see some guys here so worried about the chance to troll someone that forgets to use logic.

Thank you!

I'm glad to see you used the Pipedia image as a reference... Thank you. Can you imagine who was the fool that added it to?

Best,

Well, I have to admit that I may have been hasty in my assessment of your book inscription. After searching through everything I could find all day, I think you may actually have an authentic signature from Alfred Dunhill Sr! Here are some of his signatures as recorded on patent registrations and they are very similar to the one you have in your copy. I apologize for any offense, and as soon as I pick these feathers out of my mouth I will taste a little envy for your treasure. Happy Piping!

I'm no expert on book signings but I see nothing that inherently indicates that it is unauthentic.

Some books are simply signed by the author with a signature only. Others have a dedication or "To" and is for the person receiving the book. The above example is not meant to be passed off as actually signed by the author but rather dedicated to somebody (it looks like Alanso?) with the actual author's knowledge though he himself did not put the ink on the paper.

It is not entirely uncommon for an author to be asked to allow another person to give a book with their acknowledgement.

The rare book world is a very weird world indeed.

I believe the probability of this being an authentic signature by Alfred Dunhill Sr. is very high after finding his signature recorded in patent registration documents. I also am no expert, but the similarities are abundant enough to justify a high degree of confidence. I will say that finding any documentation that includes their signature is more difficult than I had imagined but thoroughly enjoyed the pursuit and greatly increased the resources from which I can continue my research.

Ha! I wasn't sure if I was being called a troll or someone else was but I love the way this threat is turning out. Dallas, if you are right, and I hope you are, your sleuthing has flipped everything on its head. The OP is wrong in calling it a fake, and initially you as well, and I was wrong in assigning the inscription to the son. How ironic would that be, all of us wrong. And if you are right, the OP now has something much more valuable than he had a day ago and owes you a great big thank you. So a little back and forth between different camps and voila, a stunning outcome. @Casual is to be thanked as well for prompting the discussion, but you most of all for your diligent work! That said, again, I hope you are right :)

Although I would love to bask in the glory of this possible dream come true, I must redirect the credit back to the OP. Coincidentally enough, they are responsible for the contributions to the Pipedia that led me to the revelatory Dunhill signatures. Yang Forciori, it would seem, is a legitimate Dunhill Devote dedicated to promulgating their rich legacy.

I appreciated your apology. This is so unusual (especially here) that I think I'm going to frame it.
But don't worry. Thank you for that but was not necessary.

So... Sometimes I get a bit confused about how people refer to Alfred's firstborn. As Mary Dunhill related in his book (in several parts), he was treated as "Henry" (grandpa name) in his inner circle to distinguish his name from their father. Not as "Alfred son" or "Alfred Jr". "Henry" sounds perfect and doesn't confuse anyone — It makes perfect sense to me and made to them.

The signatures you pointed out in the patent records ( as the Pat. Nº No. 812,191. for Advertising Device from 1906 [Henry was only 10 years old at that time] are from Alfred's. "The Gentle Art of Smoking" it's from '54 and later reprints. So, my version is from '69 (second edition). Alfred Dunhill died in January 2, 1959. Therefore, he couldn't sign it, right? (Unless someone psychographed. If you know what I mean).

Best,

That would be correct, Alfred died in '59. Hmmm, well I just don't believe there is any nefarious attempt to decieve anyone; I believe this is a genuine article the Dunhill family gifted to someone for a reason. It is possible Henery's wife or secretary signed it for him. Where did you come by this book? I will continue trying to find an answer, it fascinates me! In regard to the apology; I understand completely how internet forums can be. People have a tendency to be much more abrasive than in person. I guess that's just how it is but, I want to better myself daily and live well so I try to be respectful. You can look at my early posts and see that I get defensive quickly because I too am accustomed to the acidic rhetoric online. I just want to do better, so I am happy you accepted my apology and thank you for the challenge!! Happy piping
