Catching up on some long overdue posts over this July 4th holiday weekend. Took a great sporting trip to Argentina a few months back with a couple buddies (hunting & fishing in Santiago del Estero and Catamarca provinces, with one day transit thru Buenos Aires). This was my third trip back to Argentina, and it's always a fantastic time with great food and very friendly people. On this visit, made a point of visiting Patagonia Pipes in the Recoleta district of Buenos Aires. Nestled behind an unassuming storefront, the shop is tiny but packed full of a surprisingly good selection of tobaccos and both new & estate pipes squirreled away in various drawers and cabinets. To make a long story short, ended up walking out of the shop with a nice 1921 Dunhill patent Bruyere bent billiard (shape 54) as well as a tin of Samuel Gawith Cabbie's Mixture (a VaPer blend I have been wanting to try for some time, but which have had difficulty finding in-stock anywhere here in the US). Now when I smoke this combo I'll always think of Argentina...

A few photos posted below. First three pics (of storefront, friendly shop owner and several customers) are from the Web and give a good "feel" for the place. Last pic shows my acquired treasures. Definitely worth a stop for any pipe smokers who find themselves down there!

Love the merchandise displayed up the walls. And the slight haze. It looks inviting. Nice pipe you procured as well. I've never been to any part of South or Central America, for whatever reason, but it's a whole world to itself.

I've gotten as far as Taiwan and Hong Kong, however briefly, and Ireland, U.K., and The Netherlands. I did know a couple who met on a trek in the Amazon, but they'd been everywhere.

What the f...k makes you think we are unfriendly people

Maybe he’s right and we’re not the most welcoming and warm-hearted people to everyone. But what makes him put Europe in one uniformed climate zone? Helsinki 18 degrees, cloudy, Khios an island in the Mediterranean see, 30 degrees, sunny, Cologne in Germany, 20 degrees partly sunny, sorry folks temperatures in Celsius.

The climate zones of Europe range from subpolar to subtropical. It gets warmer from north to south and drier from west to east.

When you visit the shop , do not overlook the local my roth tobacco. Specially the new flakes dark bite , sherlock and revolution.
Yes, the shop did also carry the My Rott (local Argentine) brand blends. In retrospect I regret not picking up some of that, but definitely on my radar screen to try in the future!

I know -- I was very excited to finally get my hands on a tin of Cabbie's. Have been wanting to try that blend for quite some time. The shop had a surprisingly good selection of Samuel Gawith and some other hard-to-find (i.e., always sold out here in USA) blends. It is a great little shop!
Awesome to hear. I’ve been looking on and off for cabbies here in the US and it seems to always be out of stock. Glad to hear my favorite blender GH/SG is alive and well down south!

Ok great about the pipe and SG blend blah, blah how was the fishing? I suspect you were shooting doves?
Ah, now on to the important stuff... :) Aside from the transit days thru Buenos Aireas coming and going, the main part of the trip consisted of 2-days wing shooting & 1 day fishing in Santiago del Estero, and 2 days big game hunting in Catamarca...

Wingshooting: As is well-known, the wing shooting is fantastic in Argentina. We limited ourselves to "only" 500 shells per morning each pass shooting doves (one could easily shoot 1000+ shells on doves in a half-day), and then another 250 shells each in the afternoon on decoyed pigeons. How many birds you hit is another matter! We averaged right about 33% on our shooting, so bagged close to 500 birds (doves and pigeons combined) each over the first two days.

Fishing: On the one fishing day (about 6 hours total time on-the-water), we caught 3 Golden Dorado (all nice fish over 20 lbs each) and 1 piranha.

Big Game: Only 2 of the 3 persons in our party were really interested in big game. One guy took a nice (14-16 pts) red stag. It was his first trip to Argentina so he was 'over the moon'. I took a nice brocket deer, and was equally happy as brocket can be difficult.

So all in all a great trip!
