Buyers of those aged tins of Capstan may be very disappointed.
All of the Capstan I had from 2019 has lost its toppings and doesn’t taste like Capstan. Same is true for the St Bruno I bought in 2016. Dead as a doornail. All toppings faded out. Whatever MacBaren was using has no staying power.
I had some 2024 Bruno last night. Was still great.

It's sad to see options dwindling, and there are definitely some Sutliff and MacBaren blends I'll miss. I hope to see more of Laudisi stepping up to fill that void. They already got that ball rolling with the Rivertown blends.

I completely agree with the St Bruno.
Luckily one of my favorites, Virginia #1, gets better with age in my opinion. I have a lot jarred and tins from 2012-2024. The 2012 is much different tasting than the 2024. The topping on the 2012 is still quite obviously MacBaren.

This thread makes me feel sad just knowing PlumCake is gone 😓
I do have about 10 pounds of it currently.

Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened, or something like that. 10lb is a respectable stash. You just have to find something similar-ish to help stretch your supply.

You say that as I smoke some plumcake.
I think 10 pounds of it will last a bit between other things I smoke.
Anything come to mind that is similar?

Many of us have already been through that sense of loss with McClelland and D&R. Then there was the whole FDA thing that prepped us all to an apocalyptic loss that never happened. It's also irritating that people just refusing to believe that the shelves in the stores will ever change. I just assume that tomorrow or one tomorrow pretty soon, there just won't be any pipe tobacco. This is way healthier thinking as long as one acts on it and stocks up on the blends you love.
D&R? As in Daughters & Ryan? I thought they were still around

Just some dead dried out leaves we are putting in pipes and smoking. Buy what is on the shelf and enjoy i
I was trying to explain the situation to my wife - if all the craft breweries got bought up and all you had to choose from was Budweiser or Modelo, would you still drink if it wasn't purely for getting a buzz, but rather for the enjoyment of the craft? You can't quite stock up on beer like tobacco, but that's the ever-present threat of continued consolidation; is just being left with so-so offerings that pale in comparison to what once was.

As a high quality beer lover (mostly trappist triples and quads and craft ipa's, I can honestly say that if all I had was a Budweiser, I'd be 100% content. I enjoy variety as much as the next guy, but when it comes down to it, I'm just happy to have something to puff and sip on. I'd smoke Old joe krantz for the rest of my life if that's all there was, and I wouldn't be any more or less content than I am now. As with everything in life though, YMMV
