I am sorry for your situation. And I hope everything goes well. And you get back to a better quality of movement. My father-in-law had surgery on his vertebrae, he could hardly move, and his pain was horrible. After the operation, he is new, he is 80 years old. His vertebrae were crushed from the middle down, a very difficult operation, but it was successful. Prayers for you Jesse.

The neurosurgeon I first started seeing in 1997 had me going through physical therapy for three years before he considered surgery on my lower back.

It sounds like your niece is a good neurosurgeon to have watching out for you.
Yep, sounds like you have the right folks on your team. I hope you can get this resolved soon.

You're very lucky to have a niece who is a neurosurgeon at Stanford no less. It's good to have an expert family member who can look out for your interests and help you sort through diagnostic possibilities and treatment recommendations. Chronic pain is unbelievably debilitating. I hope you get relief soon.

Just saw this thread and wanted to add my best wishes to you, Jesse, on your recovery and recovery. I am very sorry you are having to deal with this. You are so right that getting older is not for sissy's. I'm in my 60's and while I stay very active here on the farm, I feel the aches and the arthritis more and more with time.
Hang in there and follow the advice of your medical professionals.

Starting to Get Obsessed

As some of you know, about a month and a half ago, I woke up with extreme pain at the base of my spine. It left me barely able to walk, more like shuffle, for more than a few feet, and only in excruciating pain.
Things have improved a bit. The pain, though constant, has lessened considerably, and I can walk, using a cane or walker, for a couple of hundred feet. That’s progress, but it leaves me unable to go to the post office to fulfill some promises, so my apologies to those who I had promised to gift some tobacco.
I had an MRI last Wednesday and am waiting to hear what it reveals.
In the meantime, I’m doing my daily physical therapy exercises.
I sure would like to get back to walking the 4 1/2 to 5 miles like I was doing several days a week before this happened.
Getting old is not for sissies.
I'm wishing you the best.
It is worth checking for some potential illnesses like bacteria that could add to complications.
Also it seems like resting in a quite good hot tub can be very good, like with the Swedish hot-cold treatment.

I’ve made continuous improvement over the past several weeks. Over the Thanksgiving weekend I was able to walk across most of downtown Ashland without difficulty. I’m still not walking normally without a cane, but the side to side swaying is much reduced and the focus is on stretching out my hips, so new exercises added to the existing routine. Hopefully I’ll recover in a couple more months.
Still no firm diagnosis from the MRI, but as long as the trajectory is positive, that’s all that matters.

Lift few heavy boxes and I'll be feeling it next day. Getting old sucks. But, on the other side, I get drunk faster. Save some alcohol that way.

Thank you. Sciatica is another sort of bitch with which to deal. Yoga took care of mine when nothing else worked.
it's always worth trying something like that. I know for my arthritis in my shoulder the only thing that worked was thc infused lotion. One that didn't get any thing in your blood stream, but after trying a ton of things that has kept it happy.
Glad anything could help wish you the best.
