I was at an antique store the other day and I saw this painting, and couldn't help noticing the patrons in this tavern drinking and smoking their clays. On a closer look I noticed the pipe racks on the walls in the background ... so I guess you could order a pipe along side a drink back in the day, huh? Just like your beer stein was cleaned after you had your drink, so that the next guy can have one as well, the pipe got the same treatment ..

Please tell me you got that painting @madox07 , very nice! Perfect for a study or home bar.
Unfortunately not, the author "C. Cap" :

The asking price for this one was EUR 2000. While I am sure it may be a good price, in comparison to quotas on the above website, for example, it is a bit too rich for my blood. I will admit, though, it is indeed a good painting - thematic for us.

Actually back then they were communal pipes, that’s why the stems were so long, after you smoked it the next guy just broke a bit of the stem off and continued the pipe. After you were done, hang it up for the next fellow.
It makes sense ... I can't imagine the halebardier watching the card game doing his rounds with a large stem pocking out of his vest ... so if you want a smoke, go to the local PUB, have a drink and a smoke at the end of your shift.

I have posted this before but I am reliably informed by my late Father that his Grand Father could for a shilling (Twelve Penny's) or some figure like that could get bread and cheese, pint of beer, clay pipe and tobacco. As the man said on the video you were buying a penny worth of smoke so the numbers are about right. Remember before we went decimal in the U.K there were 12 penny = 1 shilling and 20 shilling = 1 Pound.

I was born 100 years too late

I think so too sometimes but then I think if I were born in 1881 I probably wouldn't have made it to the ripe old age of 39.

I'd rather spend time in such an old inn than a shopping mall of today

a shopping mall is probably the last place I'd like to be these days
