That’s a really neat painting. I’d love to have that. I have 5 clays and love smoking them when I want a short smoke, sample new tobaccos, or usually when I want to taste the truest smoke of a particular Virginia. I also have a small clay dedicated to smoking G&H happy brown bogie. One of my Williamsburg clays is my go to pipe in the sweltering summers here to smoke Le Petit Robin.

@madox07 Here is the whole run down on pre-decimal British currency:

1/4 penny = Farthing

1/2 Penny = 480 Pound

1 Pound = 240 Penny

12 Penny = 1 Shilling

6 Penny = 1 Six Pence (1/2 Shilling)

10 Shillings = 1/2 Pound Sterling also known as a 'Half Soverign'

20 Shilling = 1 Pound Sterling

1 Crown = 5 Shilling so 4 Crowns = 1 Pound Sterling

1/2 Crown = 2 Shillings & Six Pence or 30 Pennies

I forgot about Three Pence coins which were 1/2 or a Six Pence. So if you purchased a tin of Ogdens Battle Axe that would cost you Two and Three Pence shown on the label as 2/3 or Two Shillings and Three Pence. It's easy when you get the hang of it. Here is your trick question. How much was a Guinea?

I have posted this before but I am reliably informed by my late Father that his Grand Father could for a shilling (Twelve Penny's) or some figure like that could get bread and cheese, pint of beer, clay pipe and tobacco. As the man said on the video you were buying a penny worth of smoke so the numbers are about right. Remember before we went decimal in the U.K there were 12 penny = 1 shilling and 20 shilling = 1 Pound.
That's interesting.....I never realised baccy and pipes was included in what pubs sold.....

Wonder if my local Weatherspoons has any?:ROFLMAO:

(For non U.K. friends...Weatherspoons is a chain of pubs that sells beer and food very cheaply)

I grew up down the road from that pub, had been bought out and ripped apart. There were still a couple of older style pubs around, and quite a few blokes walking about with pipes. The village had one newsagent and five pubs within 10mins walking distance, go figure!
