An interesting PR release dropped yesterday on a new source of Perique in Laos. It's a new partnership between Tsuge Pipe Company (Japan) and L.A. Poche' Perique Tobacco centered on the production and marketing of the rare and unique Perique-type tobacco

Thoughts?
It seems like a positive development to me.

You're all good. I should know better in my description of whisky vs scotch. I drink plenty of scotch, and my dad was born in Scotland. Thanks for the correction.
Scottish mother-in-law
Never lost her Glaswegian accent despite her 40 years in Australia.
Only ever drank Scotch (always with milk !).
I ran out of Scotch on one occasion. She politely accepted a cognac, but I noticed it was hardly touched when she left 😁

The two things I wanted out of this:
1- Pipe nerds debating the relative virtues of St James vs Laotian perique.
2- Some absolute MADMAN to release a blend with Laotian perique and Vietnamese rustica ("Laotian Drug", I believe they call it, only, you know, in Vietnamese)
Edit: And if that madman is on this forum, call it "SEA #4", that's a good name for a blend. And probably appropriate to it's nicotine content.

Both areas have very similar climate and alluvial river soils. A lot of industries operate in both geographic locations such as rice farming, sugar and a lot of crawfish are farmed in Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia now. Half or more the shrimpers out here in the Gulf of Mexico are Vietnamese dudes. I used to fish off the back of Capt. Than’s boat near South Thimbalier. I would think it a positive for the industry, but of course prefer St. James if I can get it only for nostalgic reasons.

South-East Asia is perfectly suited for tobacco growing
Indonesia has a long-established history - presumably started by the Dutch to supply their tobacco industry back in the Netherlands.

While there is a huge local market for cigarettes and especially kreteks (clove cigarettes), I'm surprised that the Indonesians have not done more to develop their cigar and pipe tobacco industries

Your very insightful, as the origins of Japanese Whisky production modelled itself on Scotches. They just can't call themselves a Scotch, because it's not made there. There are a few though that have recently hit US markets that have been experimenting with making some very interesting variations on the whole whisky theme.

True, Scotch and Whisky are not the same.
All scotch is whisky, and whiskey is not scotch😉

And yes it is “whisky” as the preferred spelling for what everyone else calls “Scotch”. Whiskey is the spelling for “everything else”. How’s that for pedantic?
I think the Canadian distilleries would beg to differ with your classification of “everything else” to their whisky.

On the actual topic, it’s pretty cool to see.
I’m thinking I need to buy some red whole leaf Virginia and kimchi it to see if I could become a tobacco magnate…
