Honestly, despite the pounds of the stuff I have in my cellar, the sutliff leaf was never my favorite, but it was always good quality. Still, the loss of an American tobacco company like sutliff is disappointing. I assume the Mac Baren blends that STG continues producing will not be same since their stated goal is streamlining and efficiencies. From what I've seen a number of the MB flakes were pressed for 30 days, seems like that'll be a thing of the past with STG production practices taking over.
If I thought it would do any good I'd be all in on a boycott of STG products. But since I already don't buy any of their cigars it sounds like boycotting their pipe blends would just lead them to cut those blends more quickly. I'm not surprised a big corporation like STG has only the profit of each product in mind with plans to slash their product offerings over the next few years.
I really wonder what impact this will have on leaf sourcing in the US since it seems like sutliff was a pretty big player in that regard. Between their blends, SPC, and all the blending components they sold to smaller blenders, if all that goes away it seems like it would leave a big hole in the US leaf demand. Not sure if sutliff is sourcing leaf from the same distributors other companies like C&D is, but if nobody fills that drop in demand then I can only see things getting worse for leaf sourcing in the US as supply is adjusted to account for the drop in demand.
