I have a lot of respect for STUFFandTHINGS.

I understand it. I don't like it.

My read is this--one of these things is true:
1) STG bought Mac Baren and Sutliff for a song.
2) After adjusting for inflation, the pipe tobacco market has cratered so hard since 2011 that Mac Baren and Sutliff's entire portfolio was worth about 1/4 of STG's Lane purchase.

I think it's Option 1. And I believe STG has no pipe aficionados in its upper ranks. It sounds like the Peterson née Dunhill line, and all US-based production might be for sale. Looks like Jeremy McKenna is going to have some time on his hands, too. Otherwise, it looks like the chopping block for 60% of their blends and brands. Oof!

You know... If STG is going to treat me like this, I think I've bought what I need from them. Hear! Hear! about revisiting blenders who care. I mean, I've seen Jeremy Reeves here, and I read Greg's letters all the time. They already make up a sizable portion of my cellar. Maybe that grows.
And doesn't MacBaren own TobaccoReviews?

Honestly, despite the pounds of the stuff I have in my cellar, the sutliff leaf was never my favorite, but it was always good quality. Still, the loss of an American tobacco company like sutliff is disappointing. I assume the Mac Baren blends that STG continues producing will not be same since their stated goal is streamlining and efficiencies. From what I've seen a number of the MB flakes were pressed for 30 days, seems like that'll be a thing of the past with STG production practices taking over.

If I thought it would do any good I'd be all in on a boycott of STG products. But since I already don't buy any of their cigars it sounds like boycotting their pipe blends would just lead them to cut those blends more quickly. I'm not surprised a big corporation like STG has only the profit of each product in mind with plans to slash their product offerings over the next few years.

I really wonder what impact this will have on leaf sourcing in the US since it seems like sutliff was a pretty big player in that regard. Between their blends, SPC, and all the blending components they sold to smaller blenders, if all that goes away it seems like it would leave a big hole in the US leaf demand. Not sure if sutliff is sourcing leaf from the same distributors other companies like C&D is, but if nobody fills that drop in demand then I can only see things getting worse for leaf sourcing in the US as supply is adjusted to account for the drop in demand.

...Well, time to go spend my holiday bonus on War Horse from the stores that still have it.

I thought about doing the same, but after buying up 3 pounds of Sutliff 507C Virginia Slices I don't think my budget can handle stocking up on War Horse too. So, I'm just gonna have to let it go and make sure to stock up on all the dark strong blends from Gawith that I like next year when finances recover from the holiday season. Rest in peace War Horse, you were a good'un and one of a kind. 🐎🪦

My favorite of the various War Horse offering was the ready rub version that was released in 2016. I still have a jar of the pre-release version, which I liked a lot better than the version that Russ tweaked for release. I'll have to break that out one of these days.

Here's my advice for what it's worth. There are still many untouched wonder blends waiting to be explored.

Why lament what you can not change. Instead, begin trying other blends and/or in fact, try learning to make your own blends. It's an opportunity to do more, not less.

That's solid advice! With War Horse Green on the way out I'm gonna hunt down and try some Condor Ready Rubbed, which is particularly difficult to get here in the States and I've heard isn't quite as good as it used to be since they moved manufacturing to Poland, but hey; it's something new to try that may scratch the itch for a weirdly flavored floral licorice'y blend with a hefty Vitamin N punch. 😅

Just a random musing, feel free to ignore, but would we all be kicking up the same fuss if it was STG who was taken over and closed down? As much as I am ashamed to admit it, that could possibly be worse
You raise a good point. I personally believe MacB and Sutliff were better product custodians and actually had some tobacco lovers involved in their businesses, as evidenced by all the angst in this thread. STG is a monoculture like so many big corps. Is anyone equally passionate about any of their blends?
