Here's a little known historical fact. In the 1800s John Tate decided he wanted to make high quality nautical compasses. He set up shop, purchased equipment, hired staff, and started production. They had finished making several hundred compasses, when someone pointed out that no one had marked which end of the compass was North. Needless to say, the company went bankrupt as nobody wanted a compass that didn't tell which way is North.
Thus the saying, "He who has a Tate's is lost."
