A Fun Orlik Deluxe Restoration

Always wanted to smoke Orlik in an Orlik. Scooped this Orlik DeLuxe L190 estate up for $15. Someone had hammered the back of the stummel with heavy grit for whatever reason, but it had some great grain lurking under the damage and the worn dark stain.

Did a full sand down, sanded out the damage and restained with a slightly lighter contrast stain. Airway and inner tube cleaned up, reamed, rim charring sanded off, oxidation removed, a little tripoli and carnauba, and she’s ready to rock!

Fiebing’s leather dye. Light Brown for the first contrast layer, then sanded down and used Light Tan for the top coat. Another single pass with 1000 after that, very lightly, then a couple coats each of tripoli and carnauba.

Awesome. Thanks. I haven’t bought dye yet but have had 5 colors in my cart for weeks. Not 100% decided of which colors to get so it’s great to see specific results.

Sounds like you've done more research on Orlik's than I have. Do you know which models all had hand cut stems? I read somewhere that some of the DeLuxe's did, and that some did not.

Beautiful contrast grain. I'm always amazed how nice the wood looks once you peel the years of abuse and gook.

Nabbed another $5 Orlik. Whoop. Hallmarked LO 1949 at my first glance. Has the strangest looking bit I have seen. At first I thought it was heavy chatter, but the stem grooves/wells down on both sides when it gets to the button. Can’t wait to clean her up.
