$50 Pipe

When I have a little extra cash set aside for a more "branded" pipe, what brand should I look into?
Was thinking of something in the 50-60 range.
More than likely a bent briar since I dont have one of those...
Thinking of a dublin shaped bowl as well

$50, unless you find a nice estate, is not going to get you much, these days. Get up to $100, and you can get a nice Stanwell or Savinelli or Peterson.
Right now, there are 32 Stans, 186 Petes, and 185 Savs at Smokingpipes.com at around $100 or somewhat less.

My first vote would be to save another $50 and get yourself a good pipe. Plenty in that range.
If you're impatient, I did pick up a Savinelli Florence from Cup O Joes for a friend of mine who is starting out smoking. It's not as pretty, there are some small pits in the briar (which I'd rather see than putty fills) but the pipe smokes like a dream.

Find a nice estate pipe... if lucky you can find a great pipe at a great price.
As far as new... Im the furthest thing from a pipe snob, but I do agree that if you can save another $50 you can find a very nice smoker for about or just under the $100 range.
Just checked out MKELAW pipes, that The Old Cajun recommended .... they have some nice pipes for $50, some nice Comoy's, Savinelli's, Nordings, etc... hell I might give them a try as I am one broke mofo!

I echo the opinion of the others on here that say wait till you have saved another $50.00 smokingpipes.com has some amazing deals on Peterson pipes in the $70 - $100 range. My Peterson pipes keep getting better with age and I have yet to find one that didn't give me a "reasonable" first smoke. You get what you pay for and considering most of my pipes have increased in value over the past 20 years or so I would say they are better investment that mutual funds. I also agree with the statement that estate pipes are your best bang for your buck on the higher end pipes. There was a Dunhill shell briar recently that would retail in todays market new somewhere in the $600 range and it was won on ebay in excellent condition for $250.00 which is a steal for a shell briar. Be patient find what you want and don't settle. Time is on your side. In the meantime if you need to increase your rotation buy a couple corn cob pipes. Good Luck!

The Savinelli Roma line in the 60's is good, in my opinion. Their Morino line in the 50's a little less desirable, but still decent pipes. I haven't tried their Duca Carlo line, which sell in the 40s. Overall I think Savinelli makes a very good inexpensive pipe.

If what you want is a really good smoker, get a Falcon.
(Seriously, they are fantastic smokers).
Also, probably the most newb-friendly pipe out there. A doddle to clean & you can learn a hell of a lot about what happens with moisture & stuff in a pipe because the bowl comes off and you can have a look for yourself, then flick it out and you're back to a perfectly dry smoke.
Dump the dry-ring though. :wink:

You can get a righam voyageur for aboutthat price. My Brigham voyager is my best smoker of all my pipes so far. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
And their "filter system" actually works, and does not impart flavor in any way. I'd say it enhances the flavors, especially for aromatics, which I almost stricly smoke.

If you are set on spending 50.00 now then you should check out MKE-Law, Dave will sell you a quality pipe for sure. If you intend on saving and getting something more money, I would also see what Dave has in that range along with a Winslow Crown Viking, Savinelli, Mastro De Paja. Smokingpipes has Mastro's in the 100.00 range and they are really good pipes. I have two Mastros and have had them for a dozen years. You'll never regret paying for quality, 2 or 3 really good pipes will serve you better than a dozen OK pipes. That may ruffle some feathers here, but it's true in all things. If you buy quality the first time, your pipes will serve you for the rest of your life.

I can definitely attest to the $50 Tsuge. Mine has great grain and smokes well. It's a steal fifty clams.
