I am looking to expand my pipe collection and was just wondering if anyone had tried the 3 for $59.95 deal on pipesandcigars.com. If so is it worth the time and money to order or are they just "cheapo" pipes?

I received one of their basket pipes when I ordered their aromatic starter kit and the pipe turned out to be a decent smoker. I'm thinking a few Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipes would likely set you up better in terms of smoking abilities. Aesthetics aside (I know I didn't want to smoke one at first) they are fantastic smokers at unbeatable prices. Just make sure you get genuine MM cobs.

Zobbit:
Assuming you like the styles featured on the PipesandCigars site -- and you're okay with them picking the shapes for you -- then I'd say this looks like an okay deal. I think $20/pipe is a perfect price for a budget/basket pipe, and these are marked down from a suggested retail price of $85 for 3.
My only caution is that you're likely to get three pipes of the same brand. . . and if you don't end up liking that style or that brand, you'll have three pipes you don't love rather than just one that you took a chance on.
If you don't have a pipe shop close to you, this isn't a bad way to get started. But if you do have a shop nearby -- where you can talk to the owner and hand-pick your own budget pipes -- that would be a lot better, I think. And the pipes will end up meaning a little bit more to you in the years to come.
And, yes, you can just buy a lot of disposable corn cobs. . . but that's never my personal recommendation. If you want something that can stay with you the rest of your life, I'd recommend starting with -- and staying with -- briar. But that's a personal bias of mine.

Well the reason I am considering this is because I already have some MM cobs that I do love. But I would like to add 2 to 4 more briars because I ordered a Baraccini new smooth briar pipe. It is by no means a top of the line pipe but I am absolutely in love with it but I would like to try a few more briars.

There are good pipes sold for low prices. These may be okay, but I'd rather order inexpensive pipes one

at a time, at least, if you can't buy them in person and look them over. I'm like an old parrot repeating

myself, but here are two sources of high quality pipes for very low prices. tobaccopipes.com has an array

of Chapuis-Comoy pipes for $30 to $50 apiece that are good briar pipes, properly drilled, with good

shapes and quality stems; the only wrinkle is that many of the pipes pictured aren't in inventory. Just

look for the "Add to Basket" icon to show which they actually have. They have plenty of good shapes for

the guy with few pipes. Secondly, I highly recommend Savenelli unfinished pipes available at Cup O Joes

for about $44; they soon finish themselves to a golden honey brown and smoke like a dream. There are

many other great pipes for low prices, that will smoke as well as pipes costing far more. But those will

get you started.

They are just too cheap for decent briars, Savinelli unfinished are about as cheap as I would go.

"They are just too cheap for decent briars"
Unless the market has changed dramatically -- and it may -- I have to disagree. I have three pipes bought for $20 or less that have proven to be fine pipes. But it may be more important to pick these out personally than, say, a pipe that costs 10 times that much. Cheaper pipes may be heavier than they should be, due to improperly cured briar, or drilled haphazardly or dotted with more putty fills than you'd like. But I wouldn't write off $20 pipes across the board.

I did this deal back when it was 3 for $53. I got 2 Arte pipes and 1 St. Claude. The St. Claude has a deep scratch in it that isn't very noticeable because of the dark stain. 1 of the Arte pipes has some finish flaking off it (it bubbled and I couldn't resist picking at it). But they smoke pretty well.

Another source of impeccable pipes at low-low prices is Iwan Ries, iwanries.com. They have house pipes

under their Iwan Ries Exclusives name, that are made by Benton in the USA and are so fine I like to call

them Chicago Dunhills. Iwan Ries is in Chicago; actually, Benton makes the pipes in Texas, I believe.

They have compact pipes, Group 3, for about $36, and Group 4 for about $52. These are handsomely

finished pipes, perfectly drilled, and will last a lifetime given half a chance. I have three of these, good

as gold. You can easily spend above $100 and get less pipe.

The only reason I discount cheap pipes is because MM cobs are amazingly good smokers. At $20 a pipe, the chance you are getting something better is next to nothing. Of course I've pulled a couple pipes off of Ebay that no one bid on for around that price and cleaned them up, which turned out to be great, but new, they would have been far more than just $20. I say just get one decent pipe for the money instead of 3 very basic ones, you will enjoy it far more in the end most likely.

Thank you all very much for your input it is very much appreciated. I think instead of taking my chances on this deal I will spend the extra money and hand pick a few briars. I have been window shopping online and keep coming back to a few pipes that I really like. As I am new to the pipe world I do not know a lot about pipe brands but one I keep coming back to is Bjarne Viking pipes but I have not seen a lot of people talking these pipes up or bragging on their Bjarne pipe it has me a little hesitant. Does anyone own one or have any experience with them?

Ask Mike www.briarblues.com if he's got pipes at your price range, he will treat you better than anyone and smokingpipes.com actually puts the pictures of the exact pipe you are buying. You can also ask Samthecoffeeman or however his name is spelt on the forums, he restores many pipes and sells them for very fair prices. You can also haunt our buy/sell/trade section, our prices there tend to be rock bottom on all pipes, new and used. Unlike Ebay, pipes sold in our forums tend to have all the flaws pointed out and nothing is left for the buyer to discover.
My honest opinion though the Savinelli unfinished pipes they were talking about earlier are probably your best bet for a cheap, high quality pipe. Also the Savinelli shell pipes are really awesome and cheap as well. I'd suggest avoiding Petersons, lots of quality control issues (and they tend to smoke hot), although they are the coolest looking pipes on the market for their price. Bjarne are occasionally mentioned, I feel they are just not all that popular as there's so many choices to be had, I've only seen people saying they love them, never heard anything bad about them.

Check around at antique shops as well. I recently acquired a Savinelli Oscar Elite for $25 and saw several others that interested me enough to plan a trip back.

I bought some of these for a new smoker, and she loves them. The briar seemed to be decent, and not brylon. The bowls were smallish. I would not hesitate to make the same purchase for the same reasons.

They won't be fantastic pipes, but they WILL smoke.
If my instincts are correct, they should all look something like this:
