Although it sounds like Zobbit is on to something already. I am shocked to be the first to say check the pipesmagazine buy sell trade section cause there always seems to be a good deal there if your patient... and fast cause they go quick.

I have a couple bjarnes. They're ok. One is too heavy to clench. The other one is not terrible for clenching.

Savinelli unfinished are about as cheap as I would go.
I have a 320 unfinished Author that is one of my absolute favorites. One heck of a good $45 dollar investment...

They won't be fantastic pipes, but they WILL smoke.

If my instincts are correct, they should all look something like this:

That has to be the most butt ugliest looking pipe I’ve ever seen! I don’t think one could clench that pipe if their life depended upon it. Well... then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and whatever floats your boat.
Other than that, I’ll always opt for a good old MM cob with a Lucite stem from Walker Briar Works or a Savinelli anytime.
By the way, just out of curiosity, who is the maker of that pipe, and what is it's name?

It may be a case of finding a diamond in the rough. In the early 2000s, I purchased three no name Italian made briar pipes for $9.99 each from Iwan Ries, the oldest continually operated business in Chicago. There were no stampings of any kind on these pipes; I had to take their word they were Italian made. One of them, the lightest (in weight) of the bunch smokes extremely well. The other two smoke well, but one of them is rather heavy and not suitable for clenching. As an aside, there are some pipe smokers who are of the firm belief that the lighter the pipe, the better it smokes. Include me in this group.
Mso above mentioned the Benton pipes from Iwan Ries. I have several of these. They are good pipes at a great price. These are natural finish pipes that color beautifully. I am also a fan of virgin / unfinished pipes.

I'll chime in for Iwan Ries, as well. I picked up a no-name "board" pipe on a recent visit, just to have a memento, and it's been fine. The only stamping is "made in Italy." I think I may have paid $20-30 for it.
I can also recommend the "house" pipes from L.J. Peretti. They come in a wide variety of price ranges, down to around $30 or so. Info here: http://www.ljperetti.com/pipes/pipes_peretti-pipes.html
