Too bad they didn't date the repair bands as it would be neat to know when it was fixed.

I don't think they are repair bands. I've really looked and can't see any flaws. I think it's just ornamental.

BUT my SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) is excessive moisture most likely from use.

Here’s an update on how the stem is being saved. The original amber was broken and I wanted to save as much was possible. Here are photos of the amber with stainless steel inserts.
