I agree with you Mike, I bought a painting years ago, paid 2000$, Artist had painted a canvas for Will Rogers, Lindberg, and Lyndon Johnson, it's worth 12000$ now, that's the only big ticket item that my wife agreed on, painting is big canvas of Red Roses, Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder. The old cajun

I think numbersix and I actualy agree. We just have a different way of voicing similar thoughts. I'd be happy to shake his hand, sit, and discuss pipes over a bowl.

Precisely! Same goes for me Michael.

Yeah, it shouldn't be impossible to have big boy conversations here. For the record, Mike, I wasn't implying any naivete on the part of the Asian collectors, just some personal observation. I meet biannually with counterparts from China and Russia. Three of the dozen or so are pipe smokers - five years ago, they were on a Dunhill binge, last summer the one-upmanship had gone all high end Danish, and they were spending like there was no tomorrow.
I well realize that that's a pretty small sample compared to the breadth of folks you talk to daily, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see that pipe show up at my next meeting with these guys.....

A rather unremarkable pipe, if you ask me. The fact that there will never,

ever, be another one like it doesn't persuade me to spend big bucks on it.

I think it is a really gorgeous pipe. From what I've read, pipes like a Bo don't usually get sold on Ebay, but rather directly thru private collectors or high end pipe brokers? Posting it on Ebay at a high asking price would seem to be a fishing expedition that just might land a whopper. There really isn't a more effective way to reach that many folks looking for collectable pipes. I don't think we'll see the price it brings, it will just be removed for sale. Too bad, but it will be fun to speculate! I also wonder if the buyer would smoke it. If so, that must be one very satisfying smoke.

After spending $16k for the pipe, I could only afford a bag of P.A.!
Really, I could never spend $16k for a pipe. That would entitle Mrs. Cortez, aka. Shoe Lady, to about a dozen pairs of

her beloved Louis Vuitton matching pumps and purse ensembles -- or maybe it's Fabricio Something-or-other. :rofl:

Cortezattic I totally agree with you, it might be a unique pipe and there will never be a similar one, but i can never see myself paying this amount for a pipe... i never thought about pipes that I buy as collectable items, although I have couple of limited editions but I only bought them cause I liked them and felt that they will smoke great. Anyway, sure that a day will come and this pipe will have a new owner for the right price, however, for now I think it got more talking about than the actual 16k requesed :)

Guys,
This is only my second post, so bear with me. But Mike is right about the pipe. Nordh's are rare and expensive. I've seen them sell for a lot more than that. Without holding the pipe in my hands, the price seems about right. It will be purchased, and likely resold for more than that in short order. If a pipe is purely utilitarian to you, than of course it is not worth the price...in fact, it is absurdly high. But for those who collect and cherish the pipes for more than their function the price may be fair. Moreover, for those who have high levels of disposable wealth the price may be irrelevant. I remember when I was first getting into the hobby and saw a pipe for more than $100. I thought it was ridiculous! But I was intrigued and wanted to find out why and what else was out there. I'm glad I did, because I grew to admire the pipes, their organic beauty, and the craftsmanship that went into them.
Best,
Jeff

Ya. Jeff and Roth and Mike all make the same valid point. When it comes to ART I'm a smug, boorish philistine;

I just think it's fun to poke at other people's sensibilities. The pipe doesn't have $16k wood, nor a $16k shape;

but it's nicely done, by a dead master, and there is someone who needs to fill-out a nice collection with it.
.

A long time ago I used to scoff at those who raved about Picasso. I thought he sucked in a most amateurish way.

Then one day I learned what he was trying to do with his "weird" art, and in humility I have had nothing but praise

for the artist, and a movement that was 50 years or more ahead of the rest of us philistines.

Interesting turn of events in this thread! Overall, I have to admit that they make a good argument and who am I to judge? I do believe a quality pipe by an artisan can some times be called "art" - even better, it's art you can smoke! :puffy:

It's a Bo Nordh pipe. The best of the best. It's a beatiful pipe; simple, but impeccably done, and I'm sure the picture doesn't do it justice. Probably worth every dime of $16K. And it will sell, not to an uninformed moron but to a knowledgeable well-heeled collector who wants the best and is willing to pay for it. Simple as that.

I maintain that only a moron, albeit a well-heeled one, would spend $16k for a pipe

-- and that pipe isn't even the best I've ever seen, by any criteria.
.

ps. I used to be a Moron, but I later converted to Presbyterianism.
Here's a Ser Jacopo for around $10k -- at least the wood and stain are better...

This pipe is a steal for only $6,000.
Oh wait, that's not a pipe, it's a bunch of Star Wars action figures!!! -- totally worth $6,000. Amirite, amirite?

It's a collectible, folks. Sometimes a pipe isn't just a pipe.

This whole thing is no different than playing Craps. I'm putting my money on the Don't Pass Line. I remember Preben Holm Pipes that sold in the thousands back in the 70's and 80's that today bring half of that or less!!! It's all speculation my friends.

My two cents, nothing more to add.
