I’m digging through my box of pipes from my great grandfather, and found one simply labeled “The Pipe.” An ad on eBay for a similar pipe says it’s made of graphite and dates from the early seventies. Anyone familiar with this?

Pyrolytic graphite, also used for plumbing in nuclear plants and subs, if I recall correctly. Pack less tight than briar and smoke slow. Doesn't ghost or burn out. I have several but they require a modified smoking style.

Thanks for the info, I was a little concerned about the idea of smoking out of what seemed to be plastic.
It's a new one to me. Pyrolytic graphite is an interesting material for a pipe. I would think it would behave somewhat like a clay. I would also think somewhat fragile.
I've got one I use as a taster for new blends. You can even put it in the dishwasher, so no chance of ghosting! One is all I need, though.
I have two, one I bought at Iwan Ries in the 70s and one I got from Bill Taylor at a Chicago show. The one from Ries is just like the one in your picture. The other is a bent billiard.
Like many, I use them as "tasters." They're way more sturdy than a clay, and cleaner than a cob. The graphite bowl wipes completely clean with a damp paper towel, doesn't cake, and remains relatively cool as you smoke. Look exactly as they did when I acquired them new.
And, you do get a pure, unadulterated taste of the tobacco.

I usually use this kind of pipe with blends (think Captain Black Grape) that might more easily ghost my briar or Meerschaum pipes.
Actually, asbestos would be very nearly the perfect pipe material because it is much less thermally conductive than pure carbon.
It's only the pipemakers who would die of lung cancer, asbestos is only dangerous in powder form.
I managed to grab one of these recently in an auction Lot. Had a bit of a scout around for info and found this site.

Had one in the early 70's. It has no soul, no "there" there. But why several use it for tasting only.

Perhaps, but I think I'd still pass on owning or smoking one.
Put another way, you're already surrounded by things just as dangerous as asbestos, the risks are practically identical to Fiberglass or Carbon Fiber, if you ever put sandpaper to composite materials you're as good as swimming in asbestos.
