    Breaking in a New Pipe

I smoked some Capt. Black in the bent pipe today and it smoked all the way down, with a couple of "cheater" tricks covering the bowl with a quarter and puffing to keep it burning. The cake is developing nicely so I am encouraged. This and a straight stemmed pipe were both virgin, no varnish or...

    Breaking in a New Pipe

I am trying to find a way to post a photo here. But even if I did. The photos I have of the inside bowl are not good enough to show the cake. Of more concern to me is that I live in Maine, a true nanny state. By state law, no business can ship tobacco products l I keep tobacco and pipes to a...

    Breaking in a New Pipe

Thank you. Your observation seems right. Th e cake is noticeably thicker since I asked about the off-center vent and it does not seem to be a problem. I smoked a bowl of Capt. Black today and things went quite well.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

Just got done smoking my now-favorite pipe that is breaking in well. Half-hour in the park with a light breeze and it smoked almost all the way down. I puffed one draw per 5 seconds, roughly. It was not pushing it hard. I have got a meershaum lined pipe that looks like a transparent ceramic...

    Breaking In

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/dUu19DcxNMusRoQ8/?mibextid=oFDknk I have a photo of my progress on building a cake and showing the off-center placement of the channel. Don't know if it's plain to see, however.

    Breaking in a New Pipe

The bent pipe that I am smoking once a day is breaking in well. But I noticed that the channel from the bottom of the bowl to the stem is off-center eherr it enters the bowl. It is to the right quite a way. There is nothing I can do about it. While the pipe is new in use, it is many years old...

    Breaking In

I smoked one of my newer pipes today outdoors with a light breeze. It has started to build a nice cake and I smoked it for 55 minutes before it quit. When I knocked out the remainsvthere was quite a bit of unburned tobacco left at the bottom but I am pleased, overall. The other pipe, a bent...

    Breaking In A New Pipe

I tried a pack of Amphora today. I couldn't believe how harsh it tasted. I used to smoke it as my regular tobacco. Going back to Mac Baron.

"Breaking In" A Briar Pipe? Fact or Fiction?

I just finished a pipeful in the pipe I have been working on. It lasted about 42 minutes and burned most of the tobacco except for the last 1/4 of the bowl. I did not notice very much bite and did not have to relight, so maybe things are looking up. My wife noticed the tobacco odor when I got...

"Breaking In" A Briar Pipe? Fact or Fiction?

I tried casting the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the bowl with a dab of honey where no cake had formed. So far, not a lot has happened. We'll see. I think a lot of the unpleasant taste in that lower part of the bowl is dissipating. Again, we'll see. Patience has always been my shortcoming.

    Breaking In A New Pipe

If a pipe goes out with still a lot of unburned tobacco in it, will relighting it cause problems? Should I just dump the bowl, let it cool and start again?

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

My most serious problem is that I am impatient. I WANT IT NOW! Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to success and that thwarts me on most days. But I am having some success with partial bowls, although I see the cake building up very slowly and most times the smoke becomes bad-tasting toward...

    Breaking in a New Pipe

I have begun to smoke half pipefuls now in order to break in the Brian's lower bowl section. So far it is working but I find the pipe gets hot to hold. I do notice tongue bite and blame this on both the newness of the pipe and maybe smoking too fast in order to keep the pipe lit. Any suggestions?

    Breaking in a New Pipe

I've been busted. My wife found me smoking a favorite old L.J.Peretti bulldog pipe on the back steps today and have forbidden me to smoke ever again. I think they have a phrase for this situation. I was smoking Mac Baron's vanilla cream.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

I have a fairly new pipe that is building a cake in the upper 2/3 of the bowl, but shows raw wood at the bottom because I have not been able to smoke all the way down. I have a problem with tongue burn that must be from the tar on the tobacco. No matter how slow I smoke, I get the burn. Should I...

    Hello from Bangor, Maine

I had a good experience with a fairly new briar that smoked for 45 minutes without relegating. The only problem was that when I knocked out the ashes I found that about 1/3 of the tobacco was unburned and no caje had formed in the lower heel area. I was in my car with the windows open on a...
