Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

I have a problem with a badly cut airway on a briar pipe. All it will take is a small amount of mud used to fill voids in briar But I don't know the recipe for mud. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

I have been smoking some full bowls in the 2 new Peretti virgin briar pipes I have. They are small pipes that carry maybe 2/3 the capacity of my regular pipes. They smoke at the most about 30 minutes but they are nice and are breaking in well. Just more time, a few 1/2 bowls and they may start...

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

So you don't go through all the partial bowl smokes building up to full bowls. I've found that one of my pipes has started to build cake at the bottom while I have been smoking full bowls. Others that I have dmoked partial bowls seem to resist building that carbon layer.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

The pipe came. Was a bit small but that may not be a serious issue. I think it was coated, so I lightly sanded the upper bowl. The only problem is I could not get a pipecleaner all the way in. I tried lightly altering the entrance with a handheld drill bit but no luck. Then I noticed I could...

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

I have a new bulldog bent stem coming, hopefully, today from Peretti. Looking forward to another fav pipe. Keeping my hopes up, here.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

I just finished a pipeful of Savinelli Brunelle Flake in my Billiard straight stem. Still trying to break it in and the Savinelli smoked pretty hot. But it lasted 44 minutes, which is a long smoke for me. I almost got the entire bowl with no relights but there was no way to get an ash covering...

    Reamer Recommendations

I am planning to turn a dowel to fit the cutting I need to do. I can glue sandpaper to it and use it when minor reaming is needed. I used to have an adjustable reamer but recall it was not very good and would take too much of the cake in spots. The problem I face is getting the dowel to fit the...

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

The bent stem pipe was great today. No tongue burn. I used a new butane pipe lighter and while it has a blue torch flame I was careful not to scorch the pipe. I have burn marks on one pair of pants and have customized a tee-shirt when the head of a mutch broke off and landed right on it. At...

    Breaking In A New Pipe

I see some pipes listed on buyer sites mentioning pear, cherry and walnut woods. Any cautions I should know about these?

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

Yes, I have. I am being careful with the new pipe. Thank you for the help.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

I smoked the straight stem pipe today with Captain Black and was happy there was little or no tongue burn. The pipe lasted 40 minutes but still little cake in the bottom 1/3. I'll continue the break-in effort. My bent-stem bulldog is breaking in very well and I am very happy with it. But the new...

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

"Breaking In" A Briar Pipe? Fact or Fiction?

Neanderthals have been given a bad, unjustified rep. They actually were relatively peaceful and intelligent, but the homo sapient were a violent lot who overpowered them.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

The bent pipe is doing well. I just smoked a pipeful of Half and Half. It took 30 minutes because the cake is building and there's less room in the bowl. I am trying to get to where I can use the eraser end of a No. 2 pencil to pack the pipe. So far, I can still get my pinky finger in there. The...

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

It was a torch style lighter insert for a Zippo. Definitely the hotter variety of flame. Matches can be a problem, too. We must recall our mothers telling us not to play with matches.

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

I used a butane lighter maybe twice lighting a pipe recently. The flame is extremely hot, a fine blue tint, and just getting it near a finger resulted in a burn. Luckily, my reflexes are good and I avoided a painful result. The rim of the pipe got singed a bit, though. I now use wooden matches...

Breaking in an Uncoated New Pipe

That is my problem. I am determined to smoke to the bottom but rarely am I able to do it. There always seems to be a small dottle of darkened tobacco that refuses to stay lit. As a result, there is no building of cake at the bottom third of the bowl. Exasperating. And my newest pipe, an L.J...

    Breaking In A New Pipe

Smoked the new pipe with half bowls. It is a small pipe, only 1-1/3 inch deep, if that, so they were short smokes of maybe 10 minutes. I have hopes for this one.

    Breaking In A New Pipe

The new pipe came today. I was somewhat disappointed that it was a straight stem bulldog and smaller than I imagined it would be. Also, I am not sure, but I think It may be coated. I tried a 1/3 bowl of Savinelli. Mistake. I got tongue burn and the tobacco tasted bitter, really unpleasant. I'll...

"Breaking In" A Briar Pipe? Fact or Fiction?

I finally got some Manuka honey. Expensive bur seems to work on a sore tongue. I anxiously await the arrival of my new pipe and feel prepared.
