Best English / Balkan blends for aging

I've had 8 year old Gaslight that's done just fine. Maybe because of the plug? I don't know for sure. I was expecting more of a similar experience to other latakia heavy englishes, but was pleasantly surprised.

Yikes! I guess that clarifies it. Thank you.

    Just in from STG/MacBaren/Sutliff

I don't think this is the case. They specifically say in the letter that they looked at the portfolios of the 2 companies. The manufacturing of other companies products are likely under contractual agreements. They will most definitely have to move manufacturing but they can't just stop...

Best English / Balkan blends for aging

The problem with the faded latakia is that the orientals behind it start to show up and the blends were blended with latakia, not those various oriental components. They can become an amalgamation. What I find is that the more latakia, the less well it ages for this reason. I have had...

    Just in from STG/MacBaren/Sutliff

So it still says nothing for the other companies Sutliff manufactures for. Personally, that's what I'm most concerned about.

Jeremy reeves on Radio Show of December 24, 2024

Another great show, Brian. Just chiming in to say that I've really enjoyed a few recent interviews such as this one with Jeremy Reeves and the one a few weeks ago with Per Billhall. Not that I don't enjoy all the shows you do, just that something about these were very conversational and come...

    Beard Smell

Not sure other than washing it. My wife is used to it, she's surprised if my beard doesn't smell like my pipe. I'm blessed in that she loves most of my blends.

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

Having been at this for nearly 15 years now, I can say this is true from experience. In some cases the age will change them and they're just OK (12 year old Magnum Opus). I guess that's better than nothing, but if you're cracking open a tin of Quiet Nights from 10 years ago and expecting the...

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

I haven't read all 14 pages of this thread but they also manufacture H&H as well, don't they? I'm well stocked as is, especially since latakia flavors dissipate so much after 5ish years that I typically don't enjoy them. But it'll be sad if we're having to say goodbye.

Old GLP Article About Aging & Westminster in Particular

That is it! Thank you! I honestly thought it was from an article or blog post he'd written but apparently not. So, if the 15 year mark is where he is suspecting it to peak, I should probably open one of those tins from 2007 now, and save another for 2027ish. And it may be worth having something...

Interesting. I'm not seeing it in the shop.

Which GL Pease Should I Buy?

Yeah it doesn't get the attention I think it deserves. Personally I think it's a great morning smoke.

Haphazard blending from your armchair. Post your successes and disasters.

A few times. Mostly depending on what I have left and open at the time. Recently had about a half a bowls worth of Quiet Nights left and wasn't planning on opening a new tin soon. So I mixed it with about a half a bowls worth of Charing Cross. I thought it came out great. I love both blends...

    KBV Plateau

Notice the page is off the site. Nothing about it in the news section. Anyone know if it's gone as in gone for good?

Thanks! I was hopeful, but that wasn't it.

Old GLP Article About Aging & Westminster in Particular

I seem to recall an article years ago (maybe 10 or 11) that GLP had about aging various tobacco varieties and where he thought some of his blends would be at their height before their eventual decline. I know he mentioned Westminster in particular, and from what I recall, said it would age well...

Looks like it'll be on my doorstep on Tuesday.

    Anthology coming back

I picked up a couple tins because I am really wanting to expand my VAs experience. I am a more latakia-forward English and Balkan pipe smoker and I prefer my perique to be barely there or not at all. That being said, I'm really curious of other routes VA folks might take. I figure FVF would be...

Frasier Reboot - hidden pipe reference?

I agree, they do. And I'm liking the show too. Would really have hated them butchering the original.

    Birth Year Pipe

I guess I was a little lucky. Very early into pipesmoking I stumbled on a birthyear Peterson. After confirming the stamping (1978) I went ahead with it. $75 all in. It's not my favorite pipe but I do enjoy it, particularly in December, my birth month.
