Congratulations! I still have one of these Savinelli Capri Root Briars and I found it smoked very well.

    Removing Ghosts

I had two pipes with ghosts that did not respond to salt and alcohol, wet coffee grounds, white vinegar, cleaning the mortise with brush and alcohol etc. I had almost given up. I then cleaned the mortise again with brush and oxyclean a few times. Rinsed very well and followed by alcohol. Then I...

    Cellaring question

If you jarred them fairly soon after opening the tins you should be fine. Did the jars have a lot of air space left over? Many prefer their tobacco to be somewhat dry as I do. You can rehydrate if you prefer it with more moisture. There are many posts here about that.

    Removing Ghosts

I thought I did. Quite a lot of time with the little brush and alcohol and then pipe cleaners and alcohol after a long soak with coffee grounds and alcohol. May I didn’t get the coffee grounds down in there sufficiently.

    Removing Ghosts

I was not having success with just the coffee grounds and alcohol treatment which is why I will try the charcoal next. I also did a little sanding but probably not enough to make a difference.

    Removing Ghosts

I had some follow-up questions on getting rid of ghosting: Are the activated charcoal pellets the same as those sold for use in an aquarium? Or maybe it should be ground powder? Any opinions on whether charcoal is better than coffee grounds? Is unused ground coffee superior to used coffee...

    What are You Reading Now?

Finished SPQR so I started The Anarchy by Dalrymple. It's about the East India Company and their rule of India. Very good so far.

    What are You Reading Now?

Buchan's espionage novels were very good. Geoffrey Household wrote a little later in a similiar vein. Household's Rogue Male is a masterpiece. I re-read it every few years.

    What are You Reading Now?

Here are my three current reads: Anthony Trollope's Victorian novel The Way We Live Now. It's about the decline in Victorian society with its obsession with money and unscrupulous speculators. Sounds kinda current, huh? Some consider this Trollope's best novel but I can't say that I agree...

What are You Watching? [2024] Please Rate 1-5

The Gentleman (Netflix) was just ok IMHO. Also The Last of Us (Amazon). I’d rate both 2.5.

    What are You Reading Now?

The first time through I found Master and Commander good but not great. However the series gets better and richer as it goes on. I’ve read the whole series six times and I’m thinking about when to restart it again.

If you could only smoke one blend...

GLPease Cumberland, preferably with a few years of age on it. An amazing blend imho.

How Often Do You Smoke a Pipe?

Once every other day. I limit myself for health reasons and also because I enjoy a bowl more when I smoke less.
