Stain Coming Off On My Hands

Honestly, just don't touch the briar any more than you have to. If you tape it off you'll create a worse problem as the alcohol seeps under the tape and soaks into the wood. A light touch with the Qtip on the wood won't be the end of the world, though it might pick up some stain and dirty up the...

Stain Coming Off On My Hands

In my experience, it's fairly easy to get stain off of bamboo. Usually it's when I'm staining a bamboo shanked pipe and get just a little on the shank, so I'm cleaning it immediately after it hits the bamboo. If it has some time to set into the pores, it may be more difficult to remove. But I...

Stain Coming Off On My Hands

Tung Oil on its own doesn't really dry. When you use it on an open grained wood, it's going to soak right into the pores and so that's not a big deal. It's dry to the touch because it's mostly inside the wood itself. Briar has such a hard grain that very little oil is going into the wood, most...

Stain Coming Off On My Hands

Red is problematic on a Smooth finish. Some briar accepts it well, and some just doesn't. It's whatever particular ingredient they use to create the red color that causes the problem. But it's very difficult to create a brilliant red stain, and keep it from bleeding. There absolutely must be...

Has Anyone Ever Overcome a (Latakia) Tobacco Resistance/Allergy?

Keep them if you have room to store it. My first blend was Old Ironsides. I liked the tin art and the name, but fell in love with the tobacco. For years I thought Latakia was the ONLY stuff worth smoking. Then I quit smoking a pipe for a few years in my mid 20's. When I picked it up again...

    Pipe prepping ahead of time

When I drove trucks, I would generally load a few pipes before I began driving for the day. I liked to smoke flakes because the truck bouncing over potholes all day could shake the tobacco loose, but flakes stayed nicely folded in the bowl.

G.L. Pease's Take on Panel Pipes

Well I'm not saying that, but I definitely saved both of those pictures in a folder titled "Pipes I Want To Make"

G.L. Pease's Take on Panel Pipes

Man I like that pipe ! Sometimes you mix and match ideas and they just work. Four Square bowl and a round shank with MILITARY MOUNT ! It's like two great tastes that taste great together. I think it's the Military Mount that really makes this work for me. Good stuff all the way

G.L. Pease's Take on Panel Pipes

I just dug around my files until I found pics of a Bing 4 Square ! Not sure if it's the same one or not, but I love that you're keeping that one in rotation !

G.L. Pease's Take on Panel Pipes

Did somebody say Holiday Inn Bing ? As much as I dislike making smooth pipes, I make some exceptions for this one. It's a real bitch to get right !

G.L. Pease's Take on Panel Pipes

It amazes me how often that's the story with this shape. "I never paid a bit of attention to 4 squares, but fell in love once I did!" That goes for me as a pipe maker too. I never thought twice about the shape until someone commissioned one several years ago. Once I analyzed the shape enough to...
