    Back in Black?

Currently smoking a lot of straight VA. I find English / Lat bombs make it harder to sus out the nuances in other non-English blends, so I generally avoid them for that reason. That being said, Star of the East Flake is one of my favorites and I'd never say no to Plumb Pudding.

Best City for a Pipe Smoker

I remember reading some statistic from somewhere stating that almost half of Scandinavian men smoke a pipe. With STG being one of the biggest names in tobacco, I assume it would have enough infrastructure to support B&Ms and pipe shops. Probably get fewer funny looks if you're walking down the...

    Meerschaum for Beginner?

Personally, I'd say go with a cob like the MM - Country Gentleman. Try it with 6mm charcoal filters and without. If you mess something up or drop it it's not as big of a deal and you can always grow into a briar or meerschaum later.

    Dishonorable Mentions

Cult - Blood Red Moon. I love cherries and cherry-flavored anything, but in most pipe tobacco, it just tastes like chemicals and medicine.

    Predicament Ordering Tobacco

I always struggle with going wide vs going deep, be it on a particular blend or a genre. Going deep in a singular blend or style also has the benefit of cellaring. I’ve currently been going deep on straight red VA and still enjoying the nuances between each I’ve tried. If I find something I...

When Forced to Choose Only 4...

Assuming this isn't a desert island scenario and I can get back soon. At the moment I'd probably take: Rattray's - Black Virginia SPC - Liberty Sutliff - Eastfarthing and maybe a good solid codger like Granger

You Never Forget Your First: Reflections on Three Years of Pipe Smoking

The first thing I ever bought was Captain Black and a cob from a local B&M I mostly only bought Djarum cloves and other cigarillos from. I remember reading the CB packaging and not knowing what Cavendish was and thought it must be something really fancy or special. It smelled good anyways. I...

    Open McClelland Question

A bit of both. I started getting into pipe smoking around ~2015 or so. I was still learning how to smoke a pipe and figuring out what I liked when McClelland closed down. I kick myself all the time for not buying any, but I was warned that English tobacco (like the popular Frog Morton series)...

    Finally Made an Intro

Sounds about right haha, I went to school there for about a year and some change

    Done with Aromatics…?

@milk this might have already been suggested, but have you tried using a filter to help control moisture / humidity. I live in a hot and humid state, and it's almost a necessity for me. 9mm tends to work better because I find I don't have to draw as hard as with a 6mm. Edit: I should probably...

    Finally Made an Intro

Been lurking a while and realized I never made an intro. I'm from Mississippi. I'm 30. Tried a pipe in high school around 2010, but didn't really get back into it until around 2015, so around 7-8 years. I tend to smoke a bit of everything, but here lately I've really been stuck on straight red...

Potential McClelland Christmas Cheer Rival? Perhaps!

Was smoking some CC 2015 and CRF 2022 over the holidays and noticed the similarity. In some ways, I might even prefer the CRF. It’ll never be the same thing, but it’s the same concept as far as components go. Supposedly, McC had an absurdly high sugar percentage that was close to 20% while CRF...

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2022?***

Had a few bowls of Peterson - De Luxe Mixture in my Savenelli - Tortuga 127 that i typical reserve for red Va but wanted to sweeten a tad. Now enjoying some Autumn Evening out of a bent Apple Cob and sipping on an old fashioned 🍂

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2022?***

On my 2nd bowl of the 2022 C&D - Carolina Red Flake out of a Peterson Dublin 106 smooth. Has a deep, rich flavor and is surprisingly sweet at times. The spice is pretty tame and unless I puff hard on it and doesn't really get too strong until the end of the bowl. Probably the best red Va I've...

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2022?***

5th bowl of the day with a sample of McC 2030 - #1 grade Balkan. Kind of reminds me of a sweeter Plumb Pudding and is pretty close to something like Squadron Leader or maybe Star of the East Flake with less Lat.

    Joe Lankford passing. RIP

Plum Pudding was my first "I get it now" smokes when I was starting out. It became my perfect smoke and was the first 8oz can that I ever bought. I had a bowl of it when I heard the news. He seems like a great guy and I know he will be missed by many.

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2022?***

Been an aro kind of day today. First bowl was C&D - Autumn Evening. Second was Sutliff - Maple Street. 3rd was a bit of McC - Black and Lemon. Now I'm on Peterson - De Luxe Mixture. All smoked out of my Sunday smoker (Country Gentleman cob) with some coffee.

The Golden Age Of Pipe Smoking

When I first started to really get into pipe smoking around 2016, give or take a year, every pouch I bought back then had a ton of wet, goopy PGP in it. That’s one thing that got a bit better IMO. I tried maybe one Dunhill before they closed. I didn’t know what McClelland was until after they...
