New Tobacco Importing Rules For New Zealand

In the news this morning. No longer able to bring in whole leaf tax free. This is part of the Governments 'Smoke free 2025' quest but they still want the tax in the meantime. Tobacco tax increases 10% per year here. No permit required to import cigars though, still got to pay the tax on them...

Going To Vietnam, Any Members From There? Or Any Tips While Visiting?

We are heading to Vietnam at the end of March for a couple of weeks. Are there any forum members from there who could fill me in about the state of pipe smoking there. From what I gather most people smoke cigs or a local tobacco which is consumed through bamboo pipes. Is it even possible to get...

    Aged Velvet

I recently picked up this un-opened packet of Velvet. Does anyone know when these packs were available? And is it worth smoking?

Two Tins the Same But Different

I got a small package in the post today which included 2 tins of MacBaren Solent Mixture. I was after some of the elusive Syrian latakia which is supposedly in this particular blend. The label on the tin dated mar 2018 claims to have it but not so for the tin dated july 2018. Maybe thats the...

If You Only Had The Choice Of 2...

I have recently moved to a new city, and in this city there is a barber that sells some pipes and tobacco. He only stocks 2 types of pipe tobacco - Erinmore Flake and Borkum Riff. I have not tried either and wonder what would folks recomend if I were to purchase some?

    New Estate - Herbert's By H.Perkins & Sons

This is my latest estate find from a junk shop in a small rural town. A small Billiard with a silver collar made by H. Perkins & Sons The stamping reads: HERBERT'S Honey Cured LONDON MADE and on the opposite side 147 MADE IN ENGLAND 6 inches long and 20.7 grams. Its a tidy piece of briar...

    First Go At Making Rope

I had a go at making some tobacco rope from whole leaf. They turned out ok but I think with a bit more practice I could get them looking better. I used Maryland, Flue cured Virginia, dark air cured and some latakia. The Maryland was used for the outer wrap though next time I'll use the air...

    New Estate - Peterson Churchwarden

After 3 visits to a 2nd hand store I finally struck pipe gold. I enquired after tobacco pipes and the store guy said they had a big pipe in the front counter, after a close inspection, I purchased it. It was looking much rougher that shown in the photos and I wasn't sure how well it would clean...

    Vintage Pipe Stand

I bought this pipe stand recently from a local vintage store. Very tidy porcelain stand, made in Italy. Dark brown with a tan leather strip around the base.

How Much Tobacco Does a Jar Hold?

I have been importing some whole leaf tobacco, as it is a far cheaper option than buying pre-packaged tobacco here. My plan is to make up a few blends and store it away in jars to age a bit and build up a cellar. I have plenty of 1/2 pint and pint jars but was wondering how much tobacco to pack...

    Good PAD/TAD Day

After 3 weeks of nervous waiting a package arrived today, it was sent by a forum member who had offerd to sell me a couple of pipes. I've not had much joy in finding decent estate pipes here so I chose 2 from his selection and was also offered some tobacco to purchase also, which I gladly...

Great Find Today. Savinelli Pisa 804 Ks

It's been a bit of a mission to find some decent pipes around here but after visiting at least 20 vintage stores and markets I scored a couple of good ones today. I didn't think my chances of finding a quality italian pipe were very good but here it is... A Savinelli Pisa 804 ks. Only...

Could 80 Year Old Cigars Still Be Smoked?

I know this post ain't about pipes but I'm sure there are some smart smokers around who could chime in. I picked up an old cigar box this morning that still had about 15 cigars still in it. The box is much older than I thought, perhaps mid 1930s. They are still wrapped indivually in cellophane...

Hardcastle Natural - Vintage Market Find

I bought this pipe from a vintage market for the very good price of $8. It looked a little unusual with the natural finish and barely used to boot. Just a clean and a little beeswax polish to get it looking good again.. Nice grain with no obvious flaws. Would I be right in calling this an apple?

    Un-smoked Finsbury II

Picked up this pipe today from a local vintage store, quite a decent size pipe. Not much information about the brand out there but obviously a second, would anyone hazard a guess as to the age?

Estate Pipes Are Scarce over Here

I am in the process of moving to another city and have been travelling back and forth a bit recently. So on my way back yesterday I stopped in at every antique/collectable/bric-a-brac store that I saw along the way. Its a journey of about 300kms that passes through several small rural towns. In...

    Aspiring Pipe Smoker from Downunder

Good day folks, What a great site this is, I've enjoyed looking around. Im located in New Zealand and am keen to try a bit of pipe smoking. Easy as that may seem, things down here are not so easy for smokers. Ive acquired a very nice, slightly used hardcastle pipe but I've yet to buy some pipe...
