    Pipe Smoking Inspiration

Because I dared to! Smoking a pipe when barely into my twenties (early 1970s) helped me stand out in a crowd!

Maybe I Have A Weird Taste In Objects

Good to see some variation and imagination when it comes to pipe racks. There seems to be an unwritten law that even home-made units must all include Nineteenth Century decoration, curlicues and whatnot. Which is better - keeping pipes with the stem or the bowl facing down?

    Where is the rim?

And so have you been scraping karst off the "rim" with a penknife and sandpaper? :)

    Where do you live?

I live in Järvenpää Finland. I dislike the place for its mediocrity and corrupt municipal governance. Here is a photo of the main shopping street from which almost all the shops have fled. At the weekends, rival gangs arrive from neighbouring towns to fight the locals.

    Boswells

I can also confirm that the Boswell family offer excellent service. I was finalising a purchase of two pipes on the morning of September 11, 2001 by email with his wife and the emails where scattered with news items heard on the radio. Memorable emails resulting in two superb pipes.

    71 Today And Still Pufffing

Many happy returns! I wouldn't mind being 71 myself one day.

    Irish Heritage

Happy St Padraig's Day to everyone. I'm sure "god" won't mind if you get drunk. He probably has more important things on his mind just lately - like where did it all go wrong? Sláinte!

Fictional Characters who should have smoked Pipes

Go on, then. Here's a +1 for all Dr Whos smoking big calabashes.

    What are You Reading?

By Virginia Woolf, even?! She can take you places you never imagined.

A Smoking Interest Call From My Doctor

I think you are - to put it gently, I think you are exaggerating an irrelevant fear. The image of the USA is Land of the Brave, where independent men and women (have to include them - equality regulations natch) forged new lives and a new way of living. But that was two hundred years ago and...

What's your everyday smoke and pipe?

I usually only smoke a Finnish Philip Morris blend sold as "pipe tobacco" called Kilta. It's actually not bad. It doesn't stink and burns nicely straight from the pouch. During the week I stuff it into a short bent or stubby to enjoy over breakfast but at weekends I empty about half a pouch into...

    Libido Bump

As a young man, I could bring about an erection by thinking about smoking a pipe. I found the idea of my doing so erotic. Such paraphilias (getting turned on by something non-sexual) aren't unusual, nor are they kinky unless they substitute for sexual activity. Unfortunately as smoking a pipe...

    How to pronounce Dr. Grabow.

It's a Slavic name with a German spelling, originally pronounced GRAAB-ov.

A Smoking Interest Call From My Doctor

In my limited experience, all doctors always mention smoking and none of them seem to differentiate between 60 a day ciggie addicts and 4 bowls a days pipe aficionados. My tobacco bill per week is under ten euros so I don't feel I'm damaging my wallet either. I had a surprise though when I went...

Pipe Makes You An Inviting Person?

I live in a very odd part of the world where people simply don't have these sort of grandfathery reminiscent feelings because pipes were never part of the folk culture. I notice the very rare pipe smokers checking each other out though. You could call it homoerotic, but it isn't as far as I can...

    What are You Reading?

"Portrait of Dorian Gray" is the most poisonous book I've ever read. I love the cynicism, the lightly off-loaded evil aphorisms, the utter immorality of the man. I'm currently rereading "Eaarth" by Bill McKibben, which explains in horrifying detail how it's now too late to stop destructive...

Advice please - lightweight, short stroll smoker

I much prefer a bent when out walking. There is less pressure on the old teeth that way. I like the way it hangs in my beard resting on my chin. I had a Savinelli 603 years ago, an Oom Paul shape, which was perfect. A tall bowl, an almost 180 degree angle before it joined the wide mouthpiece. Great!

Slightly Creepy, Disturbing...and Just Plain Confusing

I don't find the ad objectionable in any way. I'm a non-believer but I know nuns lead a fulfilling life and I accept that. They don't come round at Sunday snooze-time ringing my doorbell, after all. And the poses of the model are not sexually flamboyant nor exploitative. I take it as the ad was...

    Broken Pipe: Tony Benn

I believe he would have made a very good prime minister, if he'd had the will to take the job on. Of course, there were very many who would have put every obstacle in his path but that's the sort of thing to expect when you have a bipolar, black or white two party system. RIP

    new Calabash pipe and questions

That is a very handsomely shaped calabash. I'd like one like that too.
