Tony Benn, one the grand old men of British politics, has just passed away.
He was very old school, and an unrepentant pipe smoker all his life, long after tobacco become synonymous with devil worship.
He stuck to his principles. I cannot think of anyone else who struggled (or even tried) to renounce his peerage in order to remain in the House of Commons. To do so was illegal at the time.
Here is a link to some fine historical photos, some showing him with his pipe.
RIP Tony Benn.

Indeed I was rather saddened by this news this morning.
He stood out to me as a chap that was in it for all the right reasons and honestly I don't think we have any more like or near him left.
I am still a young at 32 and of course was not about for much of his career. That said I did take an interest in the chap and respected and admired him.
Very sad day indeed. For the loss of the individual and for British politics.

I believe he would have made a very good prime minister, if he'd had the will to take the job on. Of course, there were very many who would have put every obstacle in his path but that's the sort of thing to expect when you have a bipolar, black or white two party system.
RIP
