What Type of Stems do You Prefer?

Are vulcanite stems the ones that can have a strong taste to them? I have one pipe that even after being cleaned, the stem has a very sharp taste to it.

    How to Avoid Ashtray Mouth?

I found my old stuff from Briar Works. Some cleaner and some wax!

Only Known Photo of me Smoking. Circa 1989.

I am not. I worked IT for a small group of medical universities, and have spent many a night sleeping on exam tables in the PD Lab, but that probably does not quite qualify! As it is, many of my friends from that era are now doctors.

Only Known Photo of me Smoking. Circa 1989.

I remember Paul. He moved the shop out to Issaquah for a long while before it moving to its current location in Tacoma. I don't think he's the owner now, but I don't know why I think that. ?

    Five Favorite 21st Century Novels

I had no idea that The Road was not pre-21st! I'll lump the entire 9-book Expanse series into my #1 of 5 slot in answer to your question. I'll have to actually remember the other things I've read in order to fill out the last 4!

My Oldest Un-smoked pipe: a Karl Erik, Circa 1990

Other than it being an early purchase, it has no sentiment. I am mulling selling a few things that I don't smoke, or have never smoked. I don't need a collection, and I have 6 or 8 that I do wish to keep and smoke.

My Oldest Un-smoked pipe: a Karl Erik, Circa 1990

The Karl Erik? (I may have confused things by posting the Larsen as well.)

My Oldest Un-smoked pipe: a Karl Erik, Circa 1990

I didn't mention in the original post that it's from the early 90's... one of my early pipes.

My Oldest Un-smoked pipe: a Karl Erik, Circa 1990

Nothing interesting other than I had a few other pipes that had become regular smokers, and I enjoyed the smaller bowls in general. I also have a W.O. Larsen from the same time that I did smoke, so that probably also contributed.

My 30+ year old IM Corona Old Boy

Did I inadvertently repost? I remember posting it in reply in another thread where you and I spoke of it. I thought it would be worth it's own thread. It has been getting a fair amount of use these last few days, after years of being off duty!

Only in that my face is best when obscured!

    How to Avoid Ashtray Mouth?

There have been a lot of good suggestions here, most of which probably apply to me and how I have always smoked. I'm trying to avoid vs get used to it again. I like having a fresh mouth for food and beverage, otherwise I might not mind as much.

    What Do You Do?

Did you ever wander down the archipelago a bit and see the little island of Saba? That was home for about 7 years. 5 square miles, 3k foot peak.

    How to Avoid Ashtray Mouth?

All excellent tips and possible issues for me. I learned to pack fairly densely in three stages, and to keep it lit with frequent puffs. I also smoke without drying the tobacco. I'll try the changes!

These are the two that I have from the early 90's.

***What Are You Smoking, January 2024?***

Smoking some "Anniversary" blend from Tinder Box in a '67 Kirsten Companion that I bought as an estate pipe back in the late 90's. The tobacco was totally dehydrated as it has sat unsealed since around 2018. I put it in my humidor jar for a couple of days and it seems to have come back just fine.

    The Perfect Outdoorsman Hat

I'm envious in that I have never been a hat guy; it's just not a good look on me, with any kind of hat. I always look like a dork trying to wear a hat, which is a notch down from my usual just looking like a dork.

    PSA: Check Your Tins Folks!

I was very happy to find that each tin of my 5-tin boxed set of Dunhill from 1999 weighed in the 117g-118g range!

    The Perfect Outdoorsman Hat

I'd wanted it for sun protection as one of our two dive boats didn't have a top. Or rather, the bimini blew off, was never recovered, and the shop owner was annoyed enough by this to not replace it for a very long time. It would get salt water mist on it most days. When I'd get home, I'd...
