    Tobacco PH

I personally believe that tongue bite has to do with chemistry (alkaline pH and clashing "body chemistry") and nothing to do with high temperature of the smoke. I'm sure it's possible to smoke a pipe so hard that the smoke gets hot and steamy, but when smoked calmly and with a reasonably good...

A Stonhaven Alternative (sort of): JF Germain Rich Dark Flake

I personally think it's the same tobacco with slightly different topping. Not many merchants in the UK carry it, but has always been available when I wanted to buy some.

What's The Next Extinct Or Impossible Blend To FInd?

Old Flake. You can't find it anywhere at the moment. Sometimes I wonder if it ever existed.

    making pipe mud

I've tried both and cigar ash + water was a better formula, IMO. I guess the finer grain helps to make smoother paste. It's funny. That fireplace ash recipe is first in "pipe mud" google results. Shows good SEO practices from PM.com I personally will keep using Fred Hanna's cigar ash recipe.

Does Cut Matter or is it Just Aesthetics?

It's certainly not (just) about aesthetics. Think of it as a result of a process, rather than merely a presentation. It's how these tobaccos are manufactured. Some of those flakes you mentioned are pressed and stoved. I understand that this changes the taste considerably. Here's another reason...

    Biting, Burning Hell-Tobacco

This is exactly my situation, too. Would like to smoke an occasional Plumcake or Scottish Blend bowl, but just can't. I can feel the MacBee sting from the very first puffs. HH blends give no trouble at all.

    [OT] Avant Garde Music Anyone?

If you have one hour plus time lie down time then listen to Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt. Jeroen and Sandra Van Veen. It's marvelous pipe smoking or just being a human music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpxW6_joifI

    [OT] Avant Garde Music Anyone?

This might sound awfully elitist and all that but I don't actually five a fu[s]ck. Why should I have to make excuses that I like odd music? I have no classical nor musical training. I was just dragged into a Stockhousen "concert" thirty years ago. My interest was sparked. Is this thing utter...

Briars Colour Too. Before and After Photos.

I don't photograph my pipes much, but if anyone's interested here's a couple of photos of the same pipe, first unsmoked on the day I got it, and after about two years of smoking. Probably four to six bowls per month. We all have seen how meers take colour nicely when smoked, but does anyone...

    Pipe Cane

Ooh, that Dunhill's pipe cane is marvelous! I can imagine the annoyance when you get surrounded by blackguards and you realise that you brought your pipe cane, instead your sword cane.

    Peterson pipe filters.......

The filter adapter is a simple tube that you put in the filter space and it typically reduces the airway from 9mm to 3-4mm. Here's one:
