Farewell Sutliff Tobacco Company - Monday 3/4/25

Well, then the answer was to keep the option open to expand the manufacturing capacity of your US domestic plant, not move everything offshore to Denmark. The world is an entirely different trade zone than it was when STG closed its Sutliff plant in Richmond in December 2024. Those old arguments...

Farewell Sutliff Tobacco Company - Monday 3/4/25

It’s not about where the retailer/reseller is located. It’s about where the product is manufactured. And STG closed its only US manufacturing plant in the US. The product has to be shipped from Denmark to PA. Why do you think companies like Apple are reshoring manufacturing to the US? Apple has...

$800 De Minimis Import Tax Exemption Set To End Friday

All STG tobacco manufacturing was moved to Denmark. There is reason why hundreds of companies from Apple on down are building out US new manufacturing plants in the US. Having an “import arm” does not avoid the new Trump import tariffs. Closing the Richmond factory looks like a foolish move now...

$800 De Minimis Import Tax Exemption Set To End Friday

We will see if having even a small, 40-employee US plant open would have been a wise move right about now. Why in the world would you close a profitable US plant which at least kept your import/export options open rather than put all your eggs in one basket in Denmark?

Farewell Sutliff Tobacco Company - Monday 3/4/25

All Danish imports are subject to the US blanket tariff of 10% now on the EU, and STG lost the ability to have its retailers ship its products to US costumers now in tariff-free orders under $800 de minimis exception which was suspended as of today. We will see…

Farewell Sutliff Tobacco Company - Monday 3/4/25

With the end of the $800 de minimis tariff exception today on foreign imports and the other new tariffs, the closing of a U.S. domestic manufacturing plant in Richmond VA by STG looks like a terrible decision by our Danish friends. It would have been wise to keep a ta riff-free manufacturing...

$800 De Minimis Import Tax Exemption Set To End Friday

I have to wonder if the smartest men in the room at STG are sorry they closed the Sutliff plant in Richmond, VA right about now. It would have been smart to keep a domestic US manufacturer open, it seems. I hope Leonard is still around to chime in…

Per Jensen with New Blends on Radio Show of August 26, 2025

It was the “However” that made the post unfortunate, or at a minimum inartfully phrased.

Per Jensen with New Blends on Radio Show of August 26, 2025

Man, that’s a mixed review. Brian Levine is the man and your description of him in that first sentence is totally wrong.

Man, you got this “trolling the codgers” down to an art form.😑

Per Jensen with New Blends on Radio Show of August 26, 2025

It does not surprise me that two of the most talented and humble men in the pipe and tobacco industry, Sykes Wilford and Per Jensen, are finally under the same roof. Combining Per Jensen and Jeremy Reeves in the blending room together is a recipe for deliciousness.

Per Jensen’s Upcoming Blends at C&D

Interesting interview this week on Brian Levine’s radio show with Per Jensen, who now blends with Jeremy Reeves at C&D. Per said the most pleasant surprise was how pure and uncased C&D leaves its blends compared to Mac Baren’s, and the superior quality of the tobacco C&D sources. Can’t wait to...

    STG Announces 2d Quarter Results

https://ml-eu.globenewswire.com/Resource/Download/59027452-1502-4f39-a519-8ca5f3386da4 ”The reported net sales were enhanced by the addition of the Mac Baren business…”

    Sutliff still in stock

Exactly. Sutliff was wholly owned by MacBaren, and Sutliff’s sales and profits were not reported separately. In STG’s release announcing its purchase of both companies it noted Mac Baren’s annual revenues (which included Sutliff) through April 2024 were $103.84 million with an EBITDA—a measure...

$800 De Minimis Import Tax Exemption Set To End Friday

in the past, US buyers of pipes and other goods from retailers in Europe, China and other foreign countries paid no import tariffs if the value was less than $800 pursuant to what is known as the de minimis exception. There was little or no paperwork to complete. That is about to change on...
