    Red Virginia recommendations

If you can find it Wessex Campaign Dark Flake. It's a mix of red and brown but the reds are dominant.

$800 De Minimis Import Tax Exemption Set To End Friday

Between the weakened US dollar and the new tariffs my days of surfing the European pipe sites for Castellos and Dunhills are sadly coming to a close. I used to pick up real bargains compared to US retailers especially when you factored in the (formerly) stronger dollar and lack of US state sales...

    What’s Your Fave Dunhill Blend?

I should add that I mostly smoke Virginias and of the current Peterson branded blends in production my favorite is Deluxe Navy Rolls, with Flake coming in second.

    What’s Your Fave Dunhill Blend?

Dunhill Durbar. It was an Oriental forward Balkan. It was the only Dunhill english blend I liked. It was discontinued in 2018 and not picked up under the Peterson re-branding. I have 20 tins in the cellar. This photo is a little misleading--the tobacco wasn't that dark in reality. More brown and...

If/Then: Peterson De Luxe Navy Rolls

Yep. I'm one. Don't get me wrong the old tins I have will be enjoyed but I think this stuff is best fresh. And also don't dry it out too much. I think there is some sugar/water solution they use to make this that gives it an extra sweetness compared to Escudo.

“The Rake” On YouTube: Recent Tour Of The Dunhill White Spot Factory in London

Just to be clear I think the shank is too thick for the height of the bowl. I mean it is a style some people love--a chunky feel. That's great. If this is what sells then more power to them. But it isn't what speaks to me the way the older shaping does.

$800 De Minimis Import Tax Exemption Set To End Friday

I just noticed Ebay now warns on overseas listings that tariffs will be due and collected by shipper once it enters the US. This is sure to lessen the number of pipes entering the US market.

Does anyone else here agree with me that the shaping on this Dublin is all wrong?

    Player's Navy Cut

It is interesting that some of you mention cinnamon, because the original Capstan, going way back, had coumarin as an additive, which is found in cinnamon. Coumarin in tobacco was eventually outlawed in some countries. I have detected a cinnamon background note in Mac Baren's Capstan Blue. But I...

    Player's Navy Cut

I always assumed it was a competitor in the market to Capstan. Was sold in pouches in the UK up until a few years ago. You can see photos of the modern version here: Link

I liked flakes better when they were oriented in the tin on their side like that.

What's Everyone's Opinion of the New Peterson Cobble Pipes?

While these new Cobble pipes are not to my taste I do very much like the improvements to the sandblasting that Laudisi has instituted across many Peterson lines. I bought two sandblasted Canadians recently that have deep craggy ring grain of the sort you only used to see from 1930's Dunhill or...

    Tinbids Observations

My main takeaway from looking at TinBids listings is how many now regretted decisions pipers have made building their cellars over the years. Yes, yes I know tastes change. I'm just making a little joke.

Yes this is the one I was looking for. Thank you! If you don't read German load it in a Google translated browser tab. Look closely and you'll see a tray of new Parkers. And a few of the old Charatans.

“The Rake” On YouTube: Recent Tour Of The Dunhill White Spot Factory in London

Well if it's true their market is growing it comes at a time when it feels like their production is down. Many of the retailers who used to get large numbers of Dunhill's in all finishes on a regular basis are only getting a trickle. There could be several explanations for this. Perhaps more...

Does CigarWorld (Tabac Benden) ship tobacco to the US?

“The Rake” On YouTube: Recent Tour Of The Dunhill White Spot Factory in London

I don't think this has been overly negative. One day we will all wake up to the news that Richemont, the Swiss luxury goods conglomerate that own Dunhill, is getting out of the pipe business. And many of us will rush to buy the last of the available stock. I hope that day is still many years off.

“The Rake” On YouTube: Recent Tour Of The Dunhill White Spot Factory in London

I have watched all of these tours and looked closely at photos. You never see a room of raw briar drying the way you do at Savinelli. My guess is they are buying blocks, not root. I still believe the reason the Bruyere stain is so dark is so they can produce a number of smooths where the grain...

    Opening A Tin? Show Us!

By 2009, which is the earliest I started buying SL they had moved away from the gold foil paper to plain white paper insert. So that may be one of the last batches to get the gold paper. Looks great!
