“The Rake” On YouTube: Recent Tour Of The Dunhill White Spot Factory in London

OK, for the sake of debate, I’ll play, but only to an extent. I personally like Castello pipes. I collect them and own sets of the Ancoretta, Lake Como, Le Dune and opera series. (PM me for a photo of my pipe case if you like.) But except for one smooth apple and a few billiards, I seldom smoke...

Have I Damaged My Pipe In My Early Attempts At Pipe Smoking?

Magic Erasers are great. I also use a healthy dose of Murphy‘s Oil soap (available in the cleaning supplies section of most dollar stores) as a non-destructive method that works well on minor rim burn. When you smoke outdoors in the wind as often as I do, even using a soft flame Old Boy lighter...

Have I Damaged My Pipe In My Early Attempts At Pipe Smoking?

That rim scorching is pretty severe but can be made to look a lot better with a gentle contour sanding using 220 grit sandpaper and some Danish oil. There is no use sanding other than the surface top or following the scorch deeper into the bowl because you will never get it all and only ruin...

***What Are You Smoking, August 2025?***

Cobblestone Hiking is an incredible tobacco, if you can find it now. I have a few tins left. It gets even better with age.

***What Are You Smoking, August 2025?***

Opened a tin of Villiger’s 1888 Early Day I found on a table at the Columbus pipe show last weekend. Smoking it in a pipe made by Brazilian Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano (“Emiliano”). Villigers is a Swiss company and this is a Balkan with gold Virginias, Orientals and Latakia.

    Savinelli Prices

I love Savinelli pipes, particularly their model 111 billiards in the Miele and Eleganza series. The company is obviously making a move to more expensive pipes via their Collection series to compete alongside Ser Jacopo and Cavicchi, and even Castello. Their Autograph series pipes can run over...

    Joe Skoda Pipes

I was lucky to have my table next to Joe Skoda at Columbus this weekend. I could not resist picking up one of his pipes. Not one of his “saucers,” but a beauty nonetheless. Note the Skoda signature two gold dot inlay on the stem. Please post any others by this great American pipe artisan.

SmokingPipes.com Annual Exposition Of Pipe Makers

I also really liked the Trey Rice, Adam Davidson and Pete Prevost pipes. But all were sold quickly.

I also like WV native Abe Herbaugh‘s 100% handmade tribute to Barling, but the $7000 price tag means I couldn’t smoke it on my tractor. The youtube video is up now, too.

Why does pipe tobacco gain value with time and not coffee or tea?

Here are two price graphs I found for coffee versus tobacco prices over time:

    How much do you cellar?

I have about three hundred unopened 50 gram tins (counting 100 gram tins twice) in tubs in my basement, so about 15,000 grams, or 33 lbs cellared, plus 10 pounds in bulk and another 100 tins opened in jars for ready access. When I look at the price stickers on some of the older tins, I realize...

Unbelievable Vintage Tobacco Available Cheap At Columbus Show

No date, but man was that that 1lb LJP paint vacuum sealed tight. A well-known tobacco distributor and I bent two czech tools trying to open it until we went over to Tim West’s table and he opened it with a bowl chisel. Everyone who smoked it loved it.

“The Rake” On YouTube: Recent Tour Of The Dunhill White Spot Factory in London

Great discussion at the 27:30 mark of how the White Spot is inserted into the stem and then the polishing with volcanic pumice. At the 35:30 mark discuses how Alfred Dunhill invented “sandblasting” of briar and how it increases surface volume and allows it to smoke cooler than a non-blasted...

“The Rake” On YouTube: Recent Tour Of The Dunhill White Spot Factory in London

Very cool video by a well-known London YouTube blogger. Interesting info on the quality briar Dunhill uses, etc. Factory manager says Dunhill demand is growing exponentially and they can’t keep up due to growth in younger pipe smokers…and how the Prince and Lovat shapes got their names.

Not Looking Likely That Seattle Pipe Club Will Be Back On The Market?

At the entrance to the Chicago Show this year there was a large poster announcing that Seattle Pipe Club blends would be reintroduced despite STG’s closing of Sutliff in Richmond. I sincerely hope I am wrong, but a knowledgeable industry source told me this weekend that C&D will not be making...

Unbelievable Vintage Tobacco Available Cheap At Columbus Show

I posted about this on the pipe show thread but thought I would add a blurb here on the tobacco thread, as well. At the NASPC Columbus Show this weekend there were hundreds of tins of vintage tobacco available, and, as an example, I was able to pick up 3 McClelland 100g tins for only $250 total...
