Now that we've seen beneath the charred curtain, smoke it and see how it goes. Hopefully that will cover with cake and build a layer of protection rather than tunnel deeper into the chamber wall. On a side note, another good way to clear rim char is a damp magic eraser. 👍
Magic Erasers are great. I also use a healthy dose of Murphy‘s Oil soap (available in the cleaning supplies section of most dollar stores) as a non-destructive method that works well on minor rim burn.

When you smoke outdoors in the wind as often as I do, even using a soft flame Old Boy lighter is not always foolproof, which is why I prefer a rusticated rather than a smooth rim on my outdoor pipes.

Give it some pipe mud.
Smoke a 1/2 bowl of super dry burly (e.g. Five Brothers) and then put a few drops of water in the ash and rub it across the bare Briar. You'll end up with a fine matte black coating.

New pipe smoker (6 weeks in) from UK here

I’ve transitioned to pipe smoking from RYO ciggies, via vaping which I found revolting and unable to replicate tobacco flavour in any way

Having read tons of information and forums on line along with watching loads of videos I feel like I’m making some good progress. I still get more bowls wrong than I get right but every one that I struggle with is a lesson and, like tonight, I’m starting to get the odd one that smokes much better.

Can anyone help me with what is happening here? Have I managed to damage the bowl in my early attempts, smoking to fast and too hot?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thank you to this entire community, the information I have read here has helped me so much already

Rob

What type of lighter are you using? NEVER USE THOSE CIGAR TORCH LIGHTERS THEY BURN WAY TO HOT .THEY WILL CAUSE THE TYPE OF DAMAGE YOU HAVE INCURRED. IF YOU CAN USE A WOOD MATCH OR A LOW VOLUME LIGHTER LIJE A ZIPPO THESE BURN HUNDREDS OF DEGREES COOLER THEN THOSE TORCHES.

This cannot be stressed enough. It literally takes seconds to fry a rim with a torch lighter. It doesnt matter how careful you try to be. You will damage pipes with them....either quickly or eventually. Its like driving a race car...one distraction and its over.
