    The Sanctuary

A conversation this morning in front of my hotel while smoking my pipe: 30-something: “Look at you smoking a pipe. I’ve seen that in the movies but never in person.” Me: ”Sounds to me like you’re watching some good old movies, but hanging out in the wrong places.” 30-something: “HaHa”

Show Off Your Castello Pipes Here!

After I saw the Castello’s on the link you provided, the sign below immediately came to mind (and for me, it wouldn’t even have to be a serious emergency.)

If You Live Near Charlotte, NC …

I’m sure they know. Flippers ruin it for the hobby. This should tell you a lot about why McCranie’s is one of oldest brick & mortar pipe shops still surviving and thriving. As we say in WV, never greedy, never needy. I limited my vintage purchase today to two of the McLelland‘s anniversary tins...

If You Live Near Charlotte, NC …

We’re visiting our son and I stopped in at McCranie’s. One of their original customers is moving to an assisted living facility and they are selling some of his vintage McCllellands and other tobacco that he purchased there over the years. Almost 80% of it was gone, but I got some great tins at...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2025?***

What better way to get ready for a trip to Charlotte, NC than some McCranies Payload Va/Per in a Stokkebye 4th Gen 1931 straight Brandy? This is one of my favorite pipe shapes.

Werner Mummert Glass Shank Reverse Calabash Poker With Polymerized Pine Cone

Wow, I missed the etching on the glass tube. Thanks for pointing that out. It is a great touch.

SmokingPipes listed and sold this one to some lucky pipe collector this morning. Very innovative, to say the least.

Photo of Alfred Dunhill Selling Pipes During WWII After His Factory Was Destroyed

I’m sure it’s been posted here before, but after a quick search of the threads I could not find it so I thought I would post it below. Deadmanspipes posted it on eBay today with a Dunhill he was offering. Talk about resilence!

Pipestud is Begging For Help Again!

When I was in high school, my English teacher told me since she thought I was going to end up in medical school. I said “Why, because I’m good in biology?“ She responded “No, because your handwriting is absolutely the worst I’ve ever seen.“ True story.

Rim Adornment On Ser Jacopo Leonardo

Those photos are from the Ser Jacopo website. They likely use a flexible shaft with a drill bit at the end with some type of custom jig.

    Pipe Cleaning and Maintenance

Buy thin or tapered pipe cleaners that pass easily and and even use them during your smoke if there is any moisture gurgling from the tobacco (I don’t use filters.). I seldom ever remove the stem. Just pre-bend the pipe cleaner for a bent stem. I also buy the longer pipe cleaners and clip the...

Added a third slightly larger (center pipe) rusticated SJ Leonardo I saw on SP.com.

***What Are You Smoking, October 2025?***

Smoking some Cabbie’s Mixture in another Tim Beaumont pipe. I love the capacity of this tall dark bamboo billiard while I haul firewood on the tractor.

***What Are You Smoking, October 2025?***

Samuel Gawith St. James Flake in a Tim Beaumont/Papa Bear blasted tulip with a soft ebonite stem. I always get a great smoke in any of Tim’s pipes.

Tom Eltang Book Now Available on SP.com

Great book with a lot of photos of this Danish Pipe maker’s work. It has been out of stock for some time, but it’s now available. It’s a great read. As Tom says: “It’s good to be a pipemaker.” https://www.smokingpipes.com/accessories/books/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=327095
