So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

Good points, flatticus. I agree that the market should correct problems in quality by itself and it's not the place of the pipemaker. I'm also with you on stems that are too thin. Maybe a more objective way to define subjective opinions about bit thickness is to express it as an acceptable...

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

To complicate matters more, some pipes that don't have the objective signs of quality can perform well. I have a few myself. Additionally, some pipes that do have the objective signs of quality can perform terrible. I've had some of those too and sold them off. I believe, though, that when a...

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

I think any perceived subjectivity in quality is more a matter of what an individual deems an acceptable compromise. Quality is weighted in the individuals mind by what matters most to them. Some don't really care if the airway is a bit high in the chamber. Some don't care if there's a slight...

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

How so? Can you give some examples? I ask because this hasn't been my experience at all. Most of them that I personally know maintain a presence on pipe forums like this one to stay up on trends in customer expectations. Most of us started out as pipe enthusiasts who love to talk about pipes...

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

FWIW, I would only fully agree on #5 in the OP. The rest is based on the OP's personal preferences but not necessarily what the pipemaking or collecting community would agree is what makes for a quality made pipe. As far as quality construction and engineering, there is fairly consistent...

Common Pipe Flaws: What Makes a Bad Pipe?

What do you mean by 'bad pipe?' Are you referring to a pipe that is poorly engineered, poorly crafted, or poorly designed aesthetically? My answer would be different for each one.

Probably No One Here Owns Any Pipe Made by Roger Wallenstein

I'm a big fan of Roger's work. I own one of his pipes. It's similar to fishbanjo's but grey in color. It's quite possibly one of my favorite pipes. If I had the money to collect a ton of pipes I would have a huge collection of Wallenstein's. I think he's an artistic genius.

    Pipe Show Etiquette

I can only speak for myself here as a pipe maker and exhibitor at shows. I don't mind haggling at all. I'm a pretty laid back fella, though. Make me an offer at shows. Worst thing I will do is tell you I can't sell it for that low but I wouldn't be offended. A few things to consider...

Nate King: Anyone Have Experience With

If anyone can pull off that pipe, it's Nate King. I'm very familiar with his work and it's top notch.

Perfect Use of Continous Curve Drilling

I'm more intrigued by the transition between the stem and shank. I wonder if it's one piece or if the stem is removable.

    Blockage in Stem...

Is it completely blocked? You didn't mention whether you could still draw from it or not just that it wouldn't pass a pipe cleaner. Also, has it always been this way or is this a recent problem with this pipe that you didn't have before?

    Is this plateau briar salvageable?

Safest bet is to cut in two pieces. Chances are pretty good that that crack goes deeper than it appears. The crack can be microscopic deeper down and you may not see it until the shank snaps off unexpectedly.

Anyone Seen Stanwell Featherweight 243 In These Finishes?

If I remember correctly, I bought it from smokingpipes.com several years ago.

Anyone Seen Stanwell Featherweight 243 In These Finishes?

I sold a red featherweight 243 because the stain bled something awful. I have a 243 Vario but it's one of my favorite shop pipes because it's so light and hangs just right while I work. Sorry I'm not much help. I like the shape too though.

Pipe Makers: Is it hard make a smooth rim on sandblast?

Otherwise, no, a smooth rim on a sandblasted pipe isn't all that difficult to do. Getting a piece of briar that cooperates and gives you a flawless rim is a bit more difficult.

Pipe Makers: Is it hard make a smooth rim on sandblast?

It may just be a miscommunication. Some pipe makers' standards are very high when it comes to sandpits and flaws. He may have meant that he shot for a smooth rim but there were flaws in the briar so he had to sandblast it. If a pipemaker said what you described to me, that's how I would...

    Pipe Costs - What's In a Name

In my experience as a pipe smoker, collector, and maker, I have found that there is a tangible difference between most low end pipes and most high end pipes. I say most because there are exceptions on both ends of the spectrum. You can find some low end pipes that are properly constructed (or...

    Jerry Crawford Pipes

Jerry's pipes are top notch and you'd be hard pressed to meet a nicer guy. I always enjoy talking to Jerry at the shows.
