    What Do I Have Here?

Very cool. If you found it on the beach it may have washed ashore from a sunken ship. It looks very old to me but the material it's made of is a mystery to me. It looks like the style of a clay or pewter pipe but the color and cracks may suggest otherwise. I hope someone chimes in that knows...

Does waxing an unfinished pipe lock in the color?

Any wax you put on your natural finish pipe is going to darken it by itself. And, yes, a pipe will darken with a wax finish over time.

Need your expert help before ordering

For your sweet tooth, Lane 1Q is a good place to start. You might also try some of the Boswell aromatics like Sweet Tea, Christmas Cookie, Pennsylvania Dutch Treat, and Berry Cobbler. All very good American aromatics with pleasant room notes. My personal favorite aromatic is Reiner's...

2015 KC Carving Contest Photos - Part II

A pipe that stands/sits should be photographed doing just that. Here's a better photo of my entry:

Heading that way tomorrow night. Got one more pipe to finish.

Pipe makers that are no longer making pipes

I've heard that Maigurs is out of the pipemaking business. Last I heard of Kurt he was focusing more on knife making. Not sure if he's out of the pipemaking biz for good or not. I talk to John on occasion and he isn't currently making pipes but I'd be surprised if he quits altogether. His...

Rick Newcombe's Pipe Smoking in the Movies - KC Pipe Show Presentation

I really enjoyed this. My love for old movies was a big influence on my decision to take up the pipe in the first place. Thanks for posting it for those of us who couldn't be at the show.

Is Applying The Term "Engineering" To Pipe Construction Baloney?

I think "engineering" or "engineered" is an apt term for pipemakers who concern themselves with the inner construction of a pipe. It's no more a slight to trained engineers as someone who makes their own clothes says they "tailor" their own clothes. They aren't tailors any more than most...

I used to think the same thing, Peck, until I realized the potential of the shape once Tokutomi created this one:

    Openness And Modification

Interesting topic for discussion. I would imagine you'll get a mix of answers from both sides of the debate. I suppose whether modifying a pipe is good or bad depends on one's perspective. If you purchase and collect pipes to smoke and don't care much about their "collectability" and if the...

    Stanwell Vario Pipes 39.99

I have a Stanwell Vario 243 made in Denmark that's several years old. It smokes great although the smooth part on the bowl seems to get hotter than the rest of the pipe.

Got Any Pipes That Smoke Better Than You Ever Expected?

I have a Savinelli Duca Carlo half bent billiard that smokes exceptionally well. It's a filter pipe that I don't use the filters for but don't have the insert either. It was a real pain to break in and I almost gave up on it at one point but it performs at the level of many of my high grades...

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

Thanks cosmicfolklore. I agree. And the best takeaway is that we can have discussions and even disagree and still show each other respect. The inability to do so is some folks downfall. We all have our moments though. :puffy:

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

I'm still not buying that quality is really subjective but that's okay. To me, a Yugo is very different in quality to a Ferrari.

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

I agree. That being said, a pipe that doesn't smoke well for one piper may smoke great for another. If there are obvious and unacceptable defects it shouldn't be put back on the market. There are some compromises in quality that have been accepted by the pipe community though that aren't...

So What Constitutes a Good Pipe?

That's a touchy question, pitchfork. I made a vow to myself to never disparage or criticize another pipemaker's work unsolicited openly on social media so I have to tread lightly. Besides, who am I to be the judge. Every pipemaker started out making "turd pipes" and almost all of them (myself...
