Mac Baren Burley London Review by Romeowood

@ Rothnh–the meatier flavors came out for me when it was DGT’d; your mileage may vary. . @Cortez–I’m trying the 100-point scale to give it more shading than the “5 star” type scale; I’m confident with this score for BLB as I’ve got tasting notes going back for more than a year, and it never...

After 30 Years, It Feels So Good....

It would be great to see your work at the NY show, Zack--that looks amazing.

I Smoked 50+ Year Old Escudo, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah

Ooh thanks for the tin collecting link mr. lower!

    Tame Your Erinmore

The stoveing technique is very hit-or-miss, and quite dependent upon personal taste, but it's not an uncommon home preparation. I don't bother tinkering with others' blends often, but this one sounds fun.

I Smoked 50+ Year Old Escudo, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah

The auction price was nice--80 bucks would be quite agreeable. I've got three from different years, earliest the 20s. The thing is, there really is *SO* much Escudo out there--it's been a very popular blend, for a very long time, and 99% of those who try it end up stocking their cellars with it...

    Tame Your Erinmore

This sounds crazy, and I've missed the original thread...but dangit if it doesn't sound crazy enough to try. Pulling a tin out of the cellar and popping it in the oven now. Will report back in a day or so.

Which VAs and Vapers Benefit From Aging the Most?

Short answer, Pipe Novelist? The ones you like will age the best. Stock up, and enjoy them as they do.

I Smoked 50+ Year Old Escudo, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah

So glad y'all enjoyed it in good company, Kevin, I only wish I could have stayed another day at the show. It was really too much to absorb in two short days. For my money, it's a damned consistent product over all this time, Sam. It's certainly much darker (in person it's really more of a dull...

    Burley Blends?

Mac Baren's Burley London Blend is a superb burley, tempered with a touch of Virginia and an extremely light topping of maple syrup (just enough to sugar the leaf). Man, somebody should do a review of that stuff....

Passing the Match (New Article by Romeowood)

Thank you all for the great feedback, I was really glad to see it struck a chord with so many. I hope that more are inspired to pass the match themselves.

A View From the Other Side of the Table (My Chicago Show Vacation 2013)

As I said in the article comments, it was great meeting in person, Winton! I was on total sensory overload throughout the show, and I'm already planning next year. Loved your perspective on it, and hope your son takes up the hobby as well.

What Are You Smoking? May 2013

NYPC Bedloe's Island in a '65 Dunhill bulldog, and I can't stop--half a tin today, and miles to go before I sleep....

The VaPerO -- Home Blending Revelation

It's that Izmir leaf, and Russ sure used the best he had in our blend. If you've ever been to the tropics and smelt the allspice trees in bloom, it's ethereal. I've found it fleetingly in other blends as well, notably some Pease concoctions, but all club-affiliated hyperbole aside, Bedloe's is a...

Brian Levine Voices the 50-year old Tin of Escudo

That's some good stuff right there. I've dated the tin to pre-1960, based on the company address, tin art, insert etc. And it's heaven in a can. Glad y'all enjoyed it!

The VaPerO -- Home Blending Revelation

If you want a VaPerO created by the deft hand of a master blender, try the NY Pipe Club Bedloe's Island. It's another product of Russ Ouellette's genius, and it's seriously in my top 5 of any genre. I started on it again at the Chicago show and have blown through a tin already--I love this...

Glad somebody caught that, Brewshooter. Thanks again to Brian for making the interview fun and rather painless. I did want to point out some of my own errata though: I misspoke while on the topic of Perique--the PipesMagazine.com article is not a 'primer on Perique', it was the much more...

Tobacco Review: Peterson - Special Reserve 2013

Great review! I look forward every year to Peterson's special offerings, and this looks like they've hit all the right notes again--could it be as good as the 2010 Holiday blend?
