    Scorched Mouth Prevention

That's a trenchant observation in the first part. It's exactly what I teach new smokers. Becoming a pipeman is an organic process. Let it happen, and have fun doing it!

    Scorched Mouth Prevention

I'm convinced that it's pH interaction between the smoker and the tobacco. It takes me about three days to get the full flavor of the new tobacco when I'm switching between Virginias and Burleys. The ashy, sometimes bitter, airy steam that a lot of Virginia diehards associate with Burley goes...

    Scorched Mouth Prevention

I appreciate the advice, but this is neither a moisture nor a cadence issue.

    Scorched Mouth Prevention

Today's lesson in "Old Dogs, New Tricks." I switch between Virginias and Burleys several times a year, whenever the seasons change or I just get a hankering. I always scorch my mouth during the transition, though, which means that for a week I don't get to smoke as much as I would like. But...

    Kaywoodie Curious

I absolutely adore the newer push-tenon Kaywoodies. They're the favorite billiards in my collection. Same shop produces Medico pipes, as well, which are my favorite workhorse smokers. Best value in the factory pipe world, imo. I buy mine through Greywoodie's site.

C&D Sunbear 2021 Edition “Black Locust”

Count me in. I've been smoking nothing but sweet burleys this month.

What Do You Use for a 5-Minute Smoking Break

Shag cut in a small pipe. MM Huck Finn is great, Dr. Grabow Lark is perfect if you like a filter.

Cornell & Diehl Americana Tobacco Review

I love American English blends. This is quite similar to Barking Dog but without the heavy casing. Big fan.

Am I a ‘Codger’ for Wanting to Smoke Only Half and Half?

I'm a big fan. A point if advice for when you upgrade to the paintcan: take the lid off, let it air out for a couple of days. More if you live in a humid climate. It really improves the smoke.

    Presbyterian Mixture Review

I'm Jewish, so I have to put on a kippah in case any of my fellow members of the tribe see the tin art. Fancy headwear mitigates most things, I've found.

    Presbyterian Mixture Review

I don't find many similarities between the two. Presbyterian is more focused on the interplay between the Orientals and Virginias, with Cyprian Latakia (that smoky, strong aroma in Kramer's English) playing a supporting role. It's sweet (Virginia) and sour (Orientals) in the best way, with just...

    Presbyterian Mixture Review

I am flabbergasted at the thought that there is a blend which you have not tried. I'ma have to go pray on this.

C&D Cornell & Diehl Eight State Burley

I have to say... pretty darn good, even with no time to transition my mouth's pH from all the Virginias I've been smoking. Enough that I'm going to start investigating Burley/Virginia/Oriental blends. Makes me regret skipping the Sun Bear release.

    I gots mine! So excited.

If you think those are interesting, wait until you smoke Trafalgar.

    6mm Artisan Pipes

Looks terrific! Your pipe is pretty much exactly what I'm into. Very loosely, what I'm looking for: In straight pipes I really like craggy sandblasts, pot shapes, good stretch of shank, and a saddle bit; i.e., Canadian, Liverpool, Lumberman, Lovat, what have you. In bent pipes I like a...

    6mm Artisan Pipes

Not to mention Dr. Grabow and Medico! Given how many those companies sell in the US, one would think that a market for artisan pipes - maybe in the $200 range - would exist somewhere.

    6mm Artisan Pipes

I like that size filter for aromatics and Virginia-heavy blends, which is about half of my smoking.

    6mm Artisan Pipes

Can you fine folks think of any independent carvers doing 6mm filtered pipes? While I like the Italian factories, they all have the same narrow drafthole drilling. Which I hate. As an aside, I think one of the reasons that MM cobs smoke so well is that they have a very wide draft which helps any...
