A Little Humor for the Day

Drive Defensively = Drive Paranoidly -- there's an idiot somewhere out there on the roads with your name on their front bumper.

California's First Tropical Storms in 84 Years

Planet Earth itself will be just fine. It's the thin scum of life on its surface that is in impending danger of extinction.

    A Good Quote

What we need is an open season on poachers, with no daily bag limit.

A Little Humor for the Day

My shipmate (back in 1972) was so proud of himself when he came up with his own riddle: Q: "Why are turds tapered?" A: "So your a$$hole doesn't slam shut!"

Can We Talk About Water Glass (Sodium Silicate)?

It's also a good reason to wear a mask or two when your area is currently receiving Volcanic Ash fallout from upwind. A large percentage of volcanic ash turns out to be nearly-powdered volcanic glass. Extremely sharp edges! Change your vehicle air-cleaner often too, and for the same reason...

Can We Talk About Water Glass (Sodium Silicate)?

Another use of sodium silicate is to "glue up" paper cartridges for black powder rifles or revolvers, etc.

Why I'm Beginning To Dislike Straight Pipes

Only two of my pipes do this, but they have a problem with the tar juices coming up the stem and ending up on the end of the bit. Really nasty when my tongue accidentally touches the bit and comes away with this liquid. These pipes are both straight.

    Pipe Sighting at the Movies

At one time, Rating = enlisted NCOs.

    Movies with Pipe Smoking Scenes

Just re-watched "The Enemy Below" for the first time in years, the only pipe smoker I noticed was the destroyer's ship's doctor.

    Movies with Pipe Smoking Scenes

It seems to have become a cliché in Japanese manga and anime that often (not always) when the good guys decide to spy on the bad guys (or on their friends' budding romance) that a short shot of them appears with them all in deerstalker caps and holding a pipe.

    Pipe Sighting at the Movies

Recently ran across "War of the Satellites" on YouTube. I only saw one character (the main character, I think) smoking a pipe, but the extremely bad (and unnecessarily stupid) writing put me off so I closed the tab about 15 minutes into the grade Z movie.

So Maybe Pizza Originated in Pompeii?

Until the Spanish conquistadors brought tomatoes back to Europe from the New World, the only relative of the tomato they had available is the very poisonous Belladonna plant.

Two Power Crazed Multi Billionaires will Cage Fight: Why?

Because they hope to end themselves before the people crying "A guillotine for every billionaire" can get ahold of them?

PSA: Used snus/dip cans are great for taking your tobacco on the go for short periods of time

I remember back when I worked as a carpenter's helper, I put all of my loose screwdriver bits into one of these containers before dropping it into my tool pouch.

Missouri Sales Tax on Online Purchases

Here in Maine, if I'm not too out-of-date on this, sales tax is 5.5% and meals tax is 7%. But you guys are lucky that your state hasn't outlawed mail-order pipe tobacco purchasing (yet?), like Maine has done.

Memorial Day - Salute to two Captains

Also remembering my own ancestor, Captain Brackett of the Maine Colonial Militia, killed along with one of his sons at the Burning of Falmouth during the French and Indian Wars.

    RIP Tina Turner

There used to be a Chinese restaurant in Biddeford, ME where the owner's wife was such a big fan of Tina Turner, she would always (at least every time we dined there) be basically doing a Tina Turner Cosplay. Hair, makeup, clothing. It was always easy to make out that it was Tina who she was all...

    Crazy Bumper Stickers.

Ages back, there were a great many people with the bumper sticker reading "I FOUND IT." Then one day, I saw a pickup truck with a variation: "I FOUND IT, BUT THE DAMN THING FELL OFF." Doubt they're connected, but after that the number of sightings of the first version began tapering off. One...

Show off Your Corn Cobs Here!

I find it annoying that the stem(s) I've had in my MM General bend themselves just outside the ferrule. Maybe these need a more solid replacement stem than what comes with the General.
