    What are You Reading Now?

The Ethics of Beauty by Timothy Patitsas. Only a few days in but it’s giving me insight on an old (but new to me) way to interpret and respond to life’s events. Fascinating stuff

    Peterson Model Numbering

I have a 2021 Halloween 314 and a Deluxe 20s and they are both excellent pipes. I second Hawkeye - buy it!

Your Pipe Acquisition of the Year

My favorite shape, a series named for one of my favorite authors, and a birth year pipe to top it off - 1986 Mark Twain XL Rustic

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

My favorite Peterson shape - the 14B. Everything about this pipe is (to me) quintessential Peterson - the shape, the dark brown Heritage finish, the wear gap on the stem, the silver mount, and the vulcanite P lip stem with a deep bend, and a System to top it all off.

    Peterson Model Numbering

I see the stamping next to the Standard on your first two photos and the number is after the Standard. It does look like there is another faint mark next to the 1 and I think it is a 4, making it a 314 medium bent billiard

    Peterson Model Numbering

Do you have a photo of the other side of the pipe? That is usually where the model number is stamped on a Peterson. The fact that it is bent means it’s either a 317,314, or 312. The 31 is a straight System pipe

    Best Match Codger Blends

Sutliff Ready Rubbed is fantastic. I never tried the original but I have tried the Lane version. I liked the Sutliff Ready Rubbed better and it’s one of if not my favorite codger blend, up there with Granger for sure. Oh and Match Sugar Barrel is very good too

Your Blend Of The Year 2022

My favorite blend this year is C&D Mad Fiddler Flake. I‘m glad this one gets so little love as I’ve already started buying some every paycheck to stock up.

    Sutliff Christmas Spice...Christmasy indeed

I just finished up a 1 oz sampler of this I threw in to get free shipping. I didn't initially care for it but it grew on me over time. Once I dried it out a bit and packed it more loosely it seemed to open up and I enjoyed it. It's not high on my list of aromatics but I think it's worth trying...

    English “problems”

Latakia is like cilantro to me - if it’s in a blend (or a dish in the case of cilantro) it’s all I can taste, whether it’s an English blend or just used as a condiment. Unlike cilantro I enjoy Latakia so it’s a nice change of pace every now and then

    Peterson System S.L.E.

That was Mark’s guess as well - a special run for a pipe shop given the lack of any official Peterson marketing for it out there

    Peterson System S.L.E.

Thanks - I really like the look of this pipe. It’s hard to capture with my poor photography skills but the darker finish brings out the grain in a way that makes it appear almost 3D. I can’t say I’ve handled too many pipes but this one stands out

    Peterson System S.L.E.

I recently picked up this pipe in new unsmoked condition but haven’t been able to come across any info on it. The finish is one I’ve never seen before and the only other feature that stands out is the system reservoir is deeper than any of my other System pipes. I reached out to Mark Irwin and...

    Opinion on Peterson System Pipe

I have a good mix of Deluxe, Premier, and Standard Systems at this point, and for me, it really depends on the model. I have a B42 Premier that I don't like at all because the P-lip is too narrow and it's like clenching a pencil, and for a pipe of that size the stem and P-lip don't have the...

    Filtering any Pipe: a Method.

I fly fish every weekend, and I use meerschaum granules for a similar reason. I don’t use filters or get tongue bite when I’m enjoying my pipe on my patio or walking around the neighborhood. I typically fish shallow, clear water, and most of my time is spent slowly walking and searching for...

    Re-visiting Lane Ltd. HGL.

I haven‘t found English blends something that I enjoy so far, but HGL is really good and I smoke it frequently. It’s got the right amount of Latakia for my current palette. It’s earned a spot in my rotation for now and once my 1 oz sampler runs out I’ll be buying more for a change of pace from...
